Cobbled streets, whitewashed houses, wrought iron balconies and traditional decorative tiles: Alcácer do Sal is a charming little town on the banks of the River Sado. Who would guess from wandering through its narrow streets that it hides 3 000 years of history? Its roots are as deep as the atmosphere is friendly and peaceful. Here, wonders are to be found at every street corner. Casa Fortunato is a true daughter of its city. Hidden among other houses, there is nothing to distinguish it from its sisters. But when they pass through the door, visitors are whisked away by a symphony of colours, shapes and materials, where design reigns supreme, even in the courtyard garden. Here, everything has been meticulously thought out like in a piece of music, each note resonating with the others. It is full of beautiful art that visitors are sure to appreciate.
We are an architect and designer from Lisbon with a passion for architectural heritage and buildings with character. We cultivate conviviality and eclecticism. We give new life to buildings that have a soul and that are rooted in their local areas. It was with this in mind that we renovated this 100-year-old house and turned it into a guest house.
The framework of the century-old villa - wooden floors and ceilings, old tiles, original shutters and beams, white walls - has been preserved and brought up to date. The house has a courtyard garden with an infinity pool to cool off on hot summer days. The interior narrative is playful, set against a backdrop of whitewash and vintage colours, a mizzle paint - a kind of milky, leaden green that outlines the contours of the rooms, framing the scarlet red, pistachio and floral motifs, the velvets, carpets and works of art, some of which belonged to my grandmother. The furniture dances throughout the house like a luminous harlequin, with such delights as a vintage Mario Bellini sofa for B&B Italia in burnt orange, sunny yellow Nimrod chairs by Marc Newson, and a seductive chaise longue in cornflower blue by Patricia Urquiola. Collecting postmodernist furniture is not my husband Antonio's only passion. His other focus is on lighting, a crucial element in his dialogue with design. Vintage Flos lamps sit beautifully beneath a hanging lamp by Noguchi, while colourful Foscarini hanging lanterns by Andrea Anastasio add an exotic touch.
Casa Fortunato is a family town house dating back to the early 19th century, originally consisting of a ground floor and a first floor. The second floor was added in the 1920s.
The house is located on the banks of the River Sado, in Alcácer do Sal, a picturesque, historic village steeped in tradition. 45 minutes south of Lisbon, it enjoys the tranquillity of its riverside location. It is around 30 minutes from Comporta and the beaches of the Tróia peninsula, famous for their powdery sand, surrounded by forests and turquoise coves that offer a much sought-after island-in-the-desert atmosphere. We like to share our way of life and meet our guests on the patio, enjoying the sunset by the pool. We offer cooked meals, prepared by my husband António using organic ingredients, which can be enjoyed amid the citrus trees in the garden or around the Daciano da Costa table, one of the most influential figures in Portuguese design in the second half of the 20th century.
In Alcácer do Sal, discover its history and cultural heritage, including the dominant castle, an 8th-century Moorish fort with around 30 towers. Visit the impressive rice fields, which also offer a unique insight into the region's farming traditions. Take a boat trip along the Sado River to explore the picturesque scenery and observe the local wildlife, including dolphins. The estuary nature reserve is a bird-watching paradise. Take in the breathtaking views from the Arrábida mountains. Enjoy the region's magnificent beaches. Carvalhal is popular for surfing and has magnificent natural surroundings, including dunes and pine forests. The unspoilt, little-visited beach of Aberta-a-Nova is renowned for its natural beauty and tranquillity. Melides Beach has vast stretches of golden sand and magnificent coastal scenery.
