Property owners’ take the floor
Why did you settle in this region, in this place and not elsewhere ?
We used to travel through Aix-en-Provence and continue to Italy, Florence, Verona or Padua to recharge our batteries and admire the stunning light of the Mediterranean landscapes. On our way, we fell under the charm of this Provencal country house, built on top of a hill with a view a medieval hilltop village built in the 12th century.
What can you offer people staying with you ?
A change of scene and a chance to rest in an unspoilt setting with a swimming pool and tennis courtyard. It is a quiet, unoverlooked area in the middle of one hectare of south-facing land planted with hundred-year-old trees. The property is located in a village that has been registered in the Alpes Maritimes inventory of picturesque sites since 1967. It boasts a privileged geographical situation, built on a rocky outcrop at the entrance to the gorges of the Siagne opposite the golf of Napoule. All around are wooded hills with oak, mimosa and eucalyptus trees. The view is like a painting come to life.
What specific architectural features does your building have ?
It is an authentic, 18th century country house surrounded by a park of more than one hectare with a well and a dovecote. Twenty windows with solid wood shutters and a large old entrance door decorate the facade. Access to the property is through a wrought iron gate. Inside, the floors are tiled and all of the rooms feature exposed wooden beams.
Places you would personally recommend
Off the beaten track, we recommend a walk between Grasse and Tanneron at the beginning of the Vayoux path which passes by our farmhouse and goes towards the woody ridge of Peymeinade. After a forest track accompanied by the song of cicadas and the scents of the Provencal maquis, a forest emerges where one can enjoy a stunning view of the high country of Grasse. Do not miss the tour of Villa Fiesole in Cannes, acquired by the painter Jean Gabriel Domergue in 1926 and inspired by Venetian palaces. During the summer, the villa's gardens host chamber music concerts.
What is its history ?
The bastide is part of the village's heritage and is one of the three oldest houses according to the orientation table of the town hall. We bought it from an American painter in 1977.
Throughout the South, dazzling limewash and pastel hues contrast with the soft warmth of interiors protected by stone, whilst the vigour of the sun plays with shadows and perspectives. Perched on top of a hill, this venerable bastide with a red ochre wash does not depart from the norm. The park is ideal for taking in the surroundings, it is the perfect place to plan a journey through these Mediterranean lands with plenty to offer. What better way to start than by wandering through the village that has wound its way around the bell tower and down the Siagne to the sea, towards Mandelieu and Cannes since the Middle Ages?
