This side of Tuscany is not the undulating hills dotted with cypresses we have come to know. It is a high and wooded region that hems the sea and sometimes towers over it from beautiful heights. It is also a land of days past and long journeys, having been chosen by the Etruscans for trade. Behind its fortifications, this small village still seems resistant to the modern day invaders – tourists in large numbers. It reveals itself only to a lucky few and among them are the privileged guests of this apartment featuring a fresh and joyful décor. From here, they can admire the Tyrrhenian Sea for as far as the eye can see and the bay of Baratti below without ever growing tired of the view.
My great-grandfather bought the whole town of Populonia at the beginning of the last century. We are now a group of twenty cousins who are very attached to this heritage and this beautiful region because we grew up there in a tight-knit family atmosphere. We spent all our holidays here which lasted from June to October!
The building was built at the beginning of the 19th century on the foundations of the Sant'Anastasia monastery whose construction began in Populonia in 1594 at the request of Isabella Mendoza, wife of Alessandro VI Appiani. This monastery was never completed. It was eventually built in Piombino because the archbishop decided in 1607 that Populonia was not a suitable place for cloistered nuns due to the barbarian invasions that were common at the time. Our house has therefore benefited from the intended primary function of the land. The building is located on the heights of the old town overlooking on one of the promontories which form the Gulf of Baratti with a view of the sea for as far as the eye can see.
Populonia was an ancient Etruscan colony known as Fufluna. The name derives from Fufluns, the Etruscan god of wine, happiness, health and growth in all things. Of the twelve Etruscan cities of ancient Etruria, it is the only one that rises above the sea. Its current configuration is the legacy of an urban plan and a fortress dating from the 15th century. In 1399, Gherardo Appiani became lord of Piombino and had the town of Populonia built. Having become the principality of Piombino in 1594, it was absorbed by the Grand Duchy of Tuscany in 1815. The town, which had been deserted many times following various invasions, was repopulated around 1700. A large number of the current houses, including our own, were built in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
Our guests will have the opportunity to live in a place that has been well loved by us, steeped in history and rich in our own story. They will experience a place surrounded by resplendent nature with a breath-taking view. A place where the sky and the sea, separated only by the waves lapping at the rocks, are the same shade of blue.
Populonia is a very intimate place. In addition to history and archaeology, it is also a place for discovering nature via the many walking trails. Paths through the woods lead to panoramic view points from which you can admire the gulf of Baratti. Others allow you to reach very evocative coves like the buca delle fate (the 'Fairy Hole'). Not far away are the thermal baths of Sassetta. They are filled with naturally hot water which flows from an underground pool at a constant temperature of 51°C. In Bolgheri and Suvereto there are a number of wineries that offer tastings of exceptional regional wines and, in particular, those from the Tenuta San Guido estate which is well known for its Grande Cuvée Sassicaia. The island of Elba is not far away, it can be reached by boat in twenty minutes from Piobino. The patch of blue sea at Baratti Bay is another must-see spot and experience.
