An Anglo-Norman mansion on the Île aux loups (island of wolves),
near to Paris on the banks of the Marne

Property owners’ take the floor

Why did you settle in this region, in this place and not elsewhere ?

It is undoubtedly one of the most original places in Ile-de-France: a holiday home with a "banks of the Marne" spirit, nestled in a park of 3500 m2! When I visited, it was love at first sight and these few lines by Baudelaire immediately came to mind: "There, all is order and leisure, luxury, beauty and pleasure". Having to reach the property by boat (we are really on an island) offers a total change of scenery, as though leaving for a long trip to another era, perhaps to join Daisy and Gatsby!

What can you offer people staying with you ?

A crossing by boat, arrival on our private pontoon, a mansion surrounded by greenery, a park and a peaceful haven in the summer - all of this together instils mystery, freedom and intimacy in the atmosphere of the property. In winter, guests feel at home with the countryside all around. We always take the time to chat with them by the 19th century fireplaces, my favourite has a window above it that overlooks the grounds.

What specific architectural features does your building have ?

The facades in brick and the half-timberings certainly give the manor an Anglo-Norman feel. The interior of the house, with refined decoration, carved wooden fireplaces and soft lighting, plunges us into the 20th century. The 1930s dominate with a mixture of unusual objects from mythical places: the Palace stools, sconces from an old cinema, furniture from Melody's in Pigalle, the famous wall from Cocteau's "Beauty and the Beast" and a portrait of Michel Simon which the artist donated himself.

Places you would personally recommend

The rowing club, our neighbour on the island, is perfect for discovering the Marne river whilst also keeping fit! The Baltard Pavilion, testimony to the old Halles de Paris. The Nogent marina, walks on the banks of the Marne, the famous Chez Gégène or La Mascotte ... and of course, Paris, which is a few minutes away.

What is its history ?

The manor was built in the 19th century by a family of industrialists (the Fenwicks) at the same time as the oldest rowing club in France, which is our neighbour and partner. L’île aux Loups is steeped in history and culture. Its name comes from a legend of the Middle Ages - when the Marne was frozen, the wolves took refuge on the island to escape the hunters. When the Marne thawed, the wolves found themselves on the island and it was named l’île aux loups (island of wolves). It was also a meeting place for painters and actors of the Belle Epoque: Jean Gabin, Marcel Carne, Charles Vanel, Marlene Dietrich, Michel Simon ... After film studios were established in Joinville-le-Pont, the stars quickly became regulars in "Hollywood-on-Marne" which attracted everybody who was anybody in Paris.

Our opinion

Let's sail away...Leaving the shore is not just for the reckless. As for the wolves, only the name remains and the manor has the île d’Amour as a comforting neighbour. A simple crossing of the Marne from Nogent and we are transported to the era of crinolines and boaters, following in the footsteps of the giants of Belle-Epoque cinema in "Hollywood on Marne". It is a place steeped in history, a private world close to Paris.
