Gazing up at the two pepperpot towers that frame the gate, one can only imagine the assaults that this imposing farm endured in the distant past. It is a whole slice of history, standing proud and untamed in the middle of the now peaceful Peregrine lands. The once defensive moat now matches the tranquillity of this estate lined with grazed meadows and leafy forests. Born under the sign of water, the Domaine de Evis stands like an upturned ship beneath the frame of the large sheepfold and invites us to drift into a maritime reverie. Quiet stays and unforgettable receptions await.
Before we fell for this fortified farm, we were already enchanted by the area and the natural park of Perche. The kindness and friendliness of the people we met encouraged us to restore and invest in this property that has a special place in our hearts. We wanted to preserve the site's originality and respect the traditional materials whilst also adding essential modern day comforts. Developing warm relationships with people and ensuring we are approachable and welcoming are our priorities.
The Domaine des Evis is surrounded by a twelve-hectare landscaped park with a pond and hundred-year-old trees. It is an old Périchonne house, a former fortified farm, surrounded by moats. The architectural ensemble dates back to the 15th and 19th centuries. At the entrance stand two majestic flint and lime pepperpot towers from the beginning of the 15th century. The large sheepfold, the central body of the farm, dates back to the beginning of the 20th century and features a roof that resembles the inverted hull of a ship. It is said to have been used as a template for the chapel of École des Roches in Verneuil-sur-Avre.
According to its etymology, the name Evis is a derivative of the ancient French for "eve", which means "water". Indeed, the house is surrounded by moats and several water features are scattered around the property. The pepperpot towers with arrow slits date back to the troubled period of the Hundred Years War in the early 15th century. They probably also mark the founding of the Evis farm and belong to the tradition of the fortified farms of the region. It developed over time and took its current form in the 20th century.
In the heart of a twelve-hectare landscaped park, the architectural ensemble of Evis offers a unique setting for tailor-made events in a family home where you will feel at ease. Our five guest rooms are decorated with antique objects that we have gathered on distant voyages. The outdoor pool is heated and open from May to September. the wellness centre, table d'hôte and brunch are available upon reservation. A cinema room is available to guests. They can learn to fish by the pond and we lend them bicycles for exploring the region.
"La Maison de Ferrière" in Francheville is great for traditional and creative cuisine; "Chez Nous Campagne", a second-hand tea room, is a timeless place of its own in the barns of a 17th century priory in Bubertré; the wonderful Chapel of Eve at La Ferté-Vidame is also a must-see. Last but not least, we would recommend trying the delicious goat's cheese from the Normand Wood farm in Rueil-la-Gadelière and the wonderful products of the Pellerie farm in La Madeleine-Bouvet.
The guest house is composed of two buildings connected by an entrance with a monumental glass roof. On one side are the 250m2 living room and the 50m2 veranda for hosting seminars and executive meetings of up to eleven people. On the other side are seven rooms - three on the ground floor and four upstairs. Each has its own bathroom. These spaces are also suitable for yoga, meditation, cooking, flower arranging and art classes. The four rooms in the gite can also be reserved.
