A large apartment in an elegant 19th-century edifice on Lyon’s river peninsula,
a stone’s throw from the city’s famous square Place Bellecour
Lyon, RHONE rhones-alps 69002 FR

Location

The apartment is nestled on an emblematic residential street in Lyon’s 2nd arrondissement on the city’s river peninsula. It is just a stone’s throw from the vast square Place Bellecour and the embankments of the River Saône. The area is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This property is ideally located. The city’s famous historical edifice Hôtel-Dieu and the Renaissance district of Lyon’s old town are not far away. Renowned schools, pedestrianised shopping streets, a daily market, a cinema, a theatre, hotels, bars and restaurants are close to the apartment too. Two metro lines, six bus lines, Lyon-Perrache train station and two motorways are also nearby, making it easy to get around, yet these transport links do not cause unwanted noise in the home.

Description

The apartment’s edifice of dressed stone was built in the 19th century. It stands on a corner where two streets meet. It has five floors and faces south-east. The building displays the main traits of the sumptuous constructions of its time: its elegant facade stands out for decorative features that were typical of architecture of its era. These include corniches, pediments and balconies with wrought-iron balustrades. The entrance is fitted with a videophone, an intercom and an entry code system for security. The communal areas are well maintained. Every landing except the top one connects to a single apartment: there are only six properties in this commonhold. A lift takes you to each floor.

The apartment

The apartment, which offers a floor area of over 200m², lies on the edifice’s first floor. Its dual-aspect position bathes it in natural light. The place has kept its original decorative features. These include a panelled wooden entrance door in a frame of mouldings, glazed doors, chevron parquet, cornices, dado panelling and finely crafted door handles from the time of construction. The panelling has mouldings in the reception rooms and it is simpler in the bedrooms. Moreover, there are magnificent marble fireplaces with gold-brass back-plates and sculpted mantels. The rooms are spacious and high-ceilinged. The entrance door leads into a large hallway that connects to a corner lounge with a floor area of around 32m² and to a dining room. Next, there are two bedrooms. Each one has an en-suite bathroom. Then there is a fitted kitchen with wooden furniture units. It is tiled and has kept its old style. A vast corridor takes you to two other bedrooms, the main one of which adjoins a bathroom, then to an office and a separate lavatory. The sale of this property includes two cellars and two lofts.

Our opinion

This remarkable apartment will delight any lover of heritage and history looking for a main home or a pied-à-terre in an outstanding backdrop. The property is ideally located in Lyon’s prestigious Bellecour district and it is close to cultural centres, shops, schools, amenities and public transport links. This seductive dwelling has kept its discreet nobility, in tune with the old area where it lies. Some renovation and decorative work is needed, but the layout does not need to be changed to bring back the place’s past splendour. Yet the option of fitting a second landing door opens up the possibility of a new layout. A delicate range of projects could therefore be considered for this calm haven, which dazzles with secret resplendence.
