Just the very mention of Sintra brings to mind the 19th century, when Romanticism was at its height and this little town, in the area around Lisbon, became a refuge for a disillusioned European elite, in search of exoticism and a lost Romanesque ideal. Poet Lord-Byron in person described it as a “glorious Eden”. Now classified as a World Heritage site by UNESCO, the town is a summary of Portuguese history, from the 7th century Moorish citadel to the exuberant Monserrate and Quinta-da-Regaleira palaces. In a house in the old centre, this 3-storey flat spans a floor surface area of 290 m². The rooms are spacious and the entire flat has been meticulously renovated. The bright, modern lounge opens directly out on to a vast, shady terrace. This flat further comprises three bedrooms, including a suite, which can be reached via an elegant central stairway. In the surrounding narrow streets, cake shops selling their famous Queijada-de-Sintra and their Travesseiros provide a delicious culinary interlude prior to visiting Pena Palace, a wonderful architectural experience, with Moorish, Baroque, Gothic and Renaissance influences.
