Location
Within Paris’s 16th arrondissement, only a few steps away from the Place du Trocadéro, this former artist’s studio, not far from the bustling rue de Longchamp and its many shops, is immersed in the peace and quiet of a Parisian no-through road, while the building’s original façade, preserved during its recent renovation, provides a noteworthy example of early 20th-century Parisian ateliers.
Located on the last floor, as are two other flats, and accessible via a lift, the property, facing north, guarantees constant natural light, whereas its unobstructed views provide a dazzling panorama of the surrounding area. In addition, its prime, but concealed location combines the assets of a sought-out environment, between the Trocadéro gardens and the quays of the Seine, with one of the capital’s most popular residential arrondissements.
Description
The First Floor
With a cosy décor, completely clad in customised natural oak panelling, the main bedroom includes a bed, which is part of a built-in unit that also features bedside tables and a number of storage spaces. Facing the shower room with a walk-in shower, a washbasin and an electric heated towel rail, a row of cupboards creates a large wardrobe, whereas, to the left of the bed, another immense cupboard, which includes several heating and reversible air-conditioning units, participates in the room’s overall minimalist feel.
In addition, a separate lavatory, with large marbled tiles, is located under the staircase, as is a cleverly integrated adjacent laundry room. This ingenious and compact space includes a washing machine, useful shelving, a small washbasin as well as another wall shelf.
The Second Floor
A staircase leads to the upper floor, which includes the kitchen and living room, bathed in ample light thanks to an immense atelier window. As for its ceilings, painted in a palette of warm hues, it creates a unique ambiance, which is highlighted by contemporary ceiling lights, while the space itself is organised around a customised piece of pale wood furniture, which is used to separate the two different areas.
On one side, the living room features a sofa, ideal for relaxation, integrated within a tall birch veneer bookcase, which also includes many storage spaces thanks to its open shelves.
On the other side, the kitchen’s layout has been designed with both ergonomics and convenience in mind: a central island, with a black worktop, includes an integrated oven and stove, cupboards as well as a counter with wooden stools. Directly opposite, an initial wall features a refrigerator, which is extended by a pantry with plenty of storage, whereas, on the other wall, a white stone worktop contains a sink under which a wine cooler, as well as a series of low cupboards, are located.
Lastly, the natural oak credenza matches perfectly with the flat’s other wooden details, such as its pale oak hardwood floors, which are, in turn, bathed in light thanks to the flat’s many skylights, while the flat’s recent energy efficiency diagnosis indicates that the property boasts excellent insulation.
Our opinion
Architecturally coherent with a deliberate design, this remodelled artist’s studio’s contemporary look does not attempt to imitate its past, but create a dialogue with it thanks to its immense atelier window, which once defined this space dedicated to creation.
As for the choice of its customised light-colour wooden furniture, which can be found throughout, it underlines the flat’s eye-catching layout, while the ceilings’ bold colours – saffron yellow and sage green – provide an unexpected chromatic signature, far removed from the regular shades normally found in Parisian dwellings.
Extremely functional, each space has a specific purpose, from the laundry room hidden under the staircase to the built-in bookshelves, whereas the flat features all the qualities one looks for in a pied-à-terre or a first-time home: an ideal location near Trocadéro, the peace and quiet of a no-through road, soft and constant sunlight thanks to its northern exposure, as well as an intelligent design, which optimises each square metre. Here, the spirit of Parisian artist’s studios continues to live on, but this time with a completely updated and modern twist.
