A historical flat, with 75 m² and two bedrooms,
in a 17th-century building, not far from Bordeaux’s Great Bell
Bordeaux, GIRONDE aquitaine 33000 FR

Location

Unassuming and, yet, full of history, the neighbourhood, located in downtown Bordeaux, stretches from the Victoire Theatre all the way to the prestigious Cours Victor-Hugo. Equidistant from the basilica on the Place Saint-Michel and Saint-André’s Cathedral, it was first a working-class neighbourhood where the lowest-income families lived before becoming ennobled over the centuries, with the construction of stately private mansions both for the emerging bourgeoisie as well as old aristocratic families.
Today, its lively streets feature a variety of shops and services, while its artistic atmosphere provides a rare authentic touch. A genuine testament to the city’s evolution, the neighbourhood continues to charm art lovers, artists and the curious alike, while the Saint-Jean train station, 15 minutes away, connects Bordeaux to Paris in two hours and fifteen minutes. Lastly, a few steps away, the Montaigne upper secondary school, the Saint-Michel green market and the river’s quays extend the vitality of this neighbourhood all the way to its borders.

Description

The flat is located within a national Historical Monument building, built in the late 17th century. The elaborate building, which was reorganised many times, is laid out around a central edifice facing the street, which is, in turn, supplemented by a small interior courtyard and an immense garden-courtyard bordered by a right-angle wing. As for its current façade, built in 1771 by the Laclotte brothers, upon the request of Joseph-Michel de Montaigne, it conceals the original buildings, constructed around 1697-1698 in all likelihood by the Roumilhac master masons.
On the ground floor, a stately, open gallery features three rusticated stonework arches, topped with a wraparound balcony supported by corbels and safeguarded by a baluster guardrail. In addition, the private mansion also stands out thanks to its wide dog-legged half-turn staircase, the walls of which are cadenced by small niches, while the flat, with approximately 75 m² and two bedrooms, is located on the second and last floor of this breath-taking building.

The Flat

The front door opens on to a small L-shaped foyer, which provides access, on one side, to a bedroom with a tiled shower room, facing the interior courtyard and, on the other, an immense living room looking out on to the garden-courtyard. In addition, a second bedroom, with views of the terrace, abuts another shower room, while the living room, with a floor area of nearly 35 m², is extremely sunny thanks to its eastern exposure and wide cross-window.
Featuring a stone fireplace, which provides a cosy touch, the room, with a floor-to-ceiling height of 3.7 metres and brushed pitch pine hardwood floors, is topped with a coffered ceiling painted in a 17th-century style, whereas a small, understated and fully equipped kitchen was created behind a set of bookshelves.

Our opinion

In one of the oldest neighbourhoods in Bordeaux, once the home to parliamentarians and today among the liveliest in the city, this renovated flat, the original details of which have been preserved, has been meticulously maintained by its current owners. Anchored in history, this charming and stately property also makes it possible to enjoy the city’s dynamic energy to the fullest, while, only a few steps from the Garonne River, whose quays are an invitation to take pleasant strolls along its peaceful banks, the flat’s overall tranquillity is combined with its triple exposure, which inundates the rooms with light and highlights the quality of its materials.
