A 200-m² apartment with a private landscaped garden,
in the Chateau de Marnes, in Marnes-la-Coquette
Marnes-la-Coquette, HAUTS-DE-SEINE ile-de-france 92430 FR

Location

This municipality was a former rural village and burgeoned during the Ancien Régime era thanks to its closeness to Versailles, before becoming a much sought-after leisure destination in the 19th century.
During the reign of Napoleon III, the name of the village was transformed and received the suffice of ‘La Coquette’ in homage to Empress Eugénie. Later, it played host to Louis Pasteur’s laboratory, where he continued his research on rabies, ensuring Marnes-la-Coquette enjoys a place in the annals of scientific history.
Today, the municipality’s appeal is down to its unspoiled and residential environment, where heritage, grand properties and nature form a special setting. Already close to Paris, the Garches-Marnes-la-Coquette train station on line L puts the Saint-Lazare station in the French capital within easy reach, as do several bus services to Pont de Sèvres and La Défense.

Description

The Chateau de Marnes is concealed behind an elegant black wrought-iron gate and looms into view among the lush vegetation, surrounded by remarkably landscaped and well-maintained gardens.
The three-level, approximately 200-m² apartment is located within the edifice today known as Chateau de Marnes, built in 1873 for the d’Allemagne family, who had been important landowners in Marnes-la-Coquette from the 18th century.
It possesses its own entrance via the garden level floor. It faces entirely towards the exterior and its first level contains the sleeping area with three bedrooms opening directly onto the garden. One of the bedrooms boasts an adjoining shower room. A long corridor lined by many cupboards leads to a bathroom, a separate lavatory and a vast utility room / linen room.
The first floor, which was previously the chateau’s grand stoop, is made up of reception rooms and is the veritable heart of the residence. Two lounges are situated one after another, with period chevron-patterned wood strip flooring, sculpted marble fireplaces and painted ceilings, the latter of which depicts trompe-l’oeil fake blue skies in keeping with the tradition of ‘open air’ style ceilings that were widespread in elegant residences in the 18th and 19th centuries.
In this section of the apartment, there is also a dining room bathed in light through a stained-glass window, enhancing the property’s unique ambiance. A separate kitchen and a guests’ lavatory are also present on this level.
The cosier top floor is reserved for the occupants’ private life, with a bedroom, bathroom and walk-in wardrobe forming a separate space away from the reception rooms.
Outside, a west-facing terrace leads out onto the around 620-m² private garden, which faces southwest. It contains remarkable trees, is sheltered from view and forms a natural extension to the edifice.
Two covered parking spaces as well as a cellar in the basement level complete the property. Three extra parking spaces can be acquired additionally.

An exceptional edifice

Chateau de Marnes-la-Coquette, a short distance from Paris, was built in 1873 and is a remarkable illustration of late 19th-century bourgeois architecture. The facade’s rich décor drew its inspiration from the period’s historicism movement and harmoniously combines red brick and ashlar. Its several levels are punctuated by openings with sculpted surrounds, stringcourses and a modillion cornice, as well as by many balconies with finely crafted wrought-iron guard-rails. The building is topped by a slate Mansard roof, punctuated by dormers as well as brick and stone chimney stacks that underline the edifice’s imposing silhouette and sophisticated elegance.

The private garden

This intimate means of accessing the house can be discovered on entering through the wrought-iron gate, following a small red-brick path and descending several steps to a period red-brick patio that stands elegantly in front of the residence and leads to a garden filled with lush vegetation, which, along with delicate wrought-iron tables here and there, creates a peaceful and refined atmosphere where the light reflects of the foliage and the stone.
The garden covers a surface of 620 m² and contains a remarkable range of different trees, including, in particular, a more than one-hundred-year-old plane tree. A wide variety of hydrangeas, rose bushes and majestic palm trees make up a flourishing haven of greenery that produces a timeless ambiance.

Our opinion

This property is ideal for people seeking much more than a simple address, instead looking for a place steeped in history and characterful architecture in an unspoiled environment, while remaining near to Paris. It also boasts the standing of a family residence, with vast volumes, moulding, fireplaces and architectural features that exude a unique personality.
The lush vegetation, peacefulness and cosiness of Marnes-la-Coquette make this a special living setting. It is an address that will suit people wishing to combine elegant heritage, nature and a remarkable lifestyle, without having to stray far from the French capital.
