Our opinion
Some houses seem to have a presence all their own. This one is a striking example. Built around 1840 in the Neo-Jacobean style, it watches over the heights of Chedington, listed as Grade II, as if suspended between sky and countryside. Its architecture, its generous volumes clad in local stone, and its rich details are testament to Victorian excellence. The Great Hall is impressive with its oak-beamed ceiling and gallery. The orangery harmoniously extends the living spaces towards the gardens. At the end of the 19th century, a water garden was created to enhance the estate. Crossed by the River Parrett, this landscaped masterpiece is now the true soul of the property, punctuated by bridges, rockeries and rare species that give the place a unique atmosphere. The estate covers some 24 hectares of sun-drenched terraces, flowerbeds, ancient woods and an ornamental lake, the fruit of the patient work of successive landscape gardeners. Two stone outbuildings complete the ensemble. Restored with discernment in 1999, the house now awaits an attentive eye to restore its stones to their former glory. Isolated in the hills but connected to London, it offers the necessary distance for peaceful contemplation of the English countryside. Its countless qualities give it all the virtues necessary for its transfer to hands that will respect its history.
