Description
The main dwelling and the former farmhouse
The ground floor
In terms of breadth, the dwelling is one room wide. The home has a dual-aspect interior. From the front court, you step through the central entrance door. In the main section, the entrance hall has a floor of natural stone tiles patterned with small terracotta square inserts. Straight ahead, this hallway connects to a little kitchen that faces the grounds. On one side, the hall connects to a 27m² lounge with a black marble fireplace, exposed beams, indoor shutters and dado panelling. On the other side of the hall, there is a dining room with a monumental fireplace, a stone sink, a French-style beamed ceiling, and a floor of old cement tiles with a strip of ornamental edging. Two glazed doors lead out into the court and garden. Beyond, in the old farmhouse, there is a 36m² office or reading room with an imposing fireplace that houses a stove. Next, there is a spacious bedroom with a floor of old terracotta tiles. This dual-aspect room is bathed in natural light from its windows on both sides. The bedroom has a shower room and a lavatory. At the far end, there is another bright bedroom. It is housed in a former stable.
The first floor
From the dining room, a timber staircase leads up to the first floor. This first floor has six bedrooms. They share a shower room with a bull’s-eye window of natural stone that looks out at the lush grounds. The first two bedrooms have floors of terracotta tiles and ceilings of wood strips. On the other side of the staircase, there is a series of three bedrooms with pine-wood strip flooring. At the south end, there is one last bedroom in a loft space. It has a sloping attic ceiling.
The outbuildings
The outbuildings stand around the front court. A first building stands at a right angle to the main dwelling. Its architectural style is typical of the south bank of the River Loire in the 19th century: a génoise cornice underlines its roof tiles and brickwork forms its window surrounds. Inside, it offers a 150m² floor area in total, spread out over a former press room, a wine cellar, a boiler room and a 75m² workshop. The latter’s floor area is doubled with a convertible loft that connects to the main house’s first floor. Opposite, a former stable stands beside the road and serves as a storeroom. It is perpendicular to the old farmhouse and it houses a pantry, a utility room and a pig shed. Among other purposes, it serves as storage space for tools. Towards the garden, hidden beneath trees, a wooden farm building can be used to store gardening equipment.
The grounds
In front of the main house, there is a gravel court where vehicles can be parked. The old farmhouse is edged with a lawn court. A rubble-stone wall separates the two courts. Behind the house, the grounds are made up of a first open-air section with a vast central lawn, as well as trimmed plants and remarkable trees, including holm oaks, magnolias, camelias and fig trees. A second part is wooded, with a pond that fills up with rainwater and runoff. To the south, there is a space designed as an arboretum. It has many varieties of trees. Behind the farmhouse, there is an orchard. A swimming pool, which is nine metres long and four metres wide, has a poolside area of concrete slabs. It enjoys absolute privacy and is bathed in direct sunlight. It lies beside an old cart shelter, which has been turned into a summer dining area. On the road side, the grounds are demarcated with walls. Hedges demarcate the rest of the grounds.
Our opinion
This former winegrowing property is a delightful gem. It enjoys absolute privacy behind its walls and hedges. The place is emblematic of grand rural properties along the south bank of the River Loire. The main house’s elevations are adorned with wisteria and Virginia creeper. The dwelling is elegantly understated in style and filled with natural light from many windows set in tuffeau surrounds. The historical interior is comfortable. It showcases monumental fireplaces and authentic tiled floors. With no fewer than eight bedrooms, in addition to outhouses, the property would perfectly suit both family life and a business project in tourist guestrooms and gîtes in an enchanting backdrop. The swimming pool and the vast, tree-dotted lawn would delight children in spring and summer.
