Location
Dourdan lies in the Essonne in the Île-de-France region, on the boundary between the state forest and the agricultural landscapes of the historic pays of Hurepoix. A former royal stronghold, the town retains a lively historic centre around its medieval chateau, with two weekly markets, a full range of shops and everyday services, schools, sports and cultural facilities, and a hospital. The RER C provides a direct rail link to Paris, and the A10 motorway is close at hand, making Dourdan one of the principal gateways to the forests of southern Île-de-France.
Description
The house
The ground floor
The entrance occupies the oldest part of the house, where the main facade opens onto a paved terrace overlooking the park. A vestibule distributes the ground floor in two directions. To one side, two reception rooms are arranged en enfilade: the drawing room retains a stone fireplace, moulded ceilings, wooden panelling with gilded fillets and period parquet. Tall windows flood both rooms with light. Beyond, the dining room is also lit by two windows. To the other side lies a bedroom with an adjoining shower room and lavatory, their floors laid in beige terrazzo. A hallway leads to a bathroom, a kitchen and a back kitchen, both of which have direct access to the outside.
The first floor
A winding wooden staircase with a wrought-iron handrail rises from the vestibule to a landing from which two bedrooms and an enclosed secondary staircase to the upper level are reached. The floors are parquet throughout. The first bedroom looks onto the park through two windows; the second faces the street and is served by a hallway with a hand basin.
The second floor
Set within the roof, this level comprises a single large room with parquet flooring, lit by several dormers. The open proportions and absence of partitioning offer considerable scope for conversion.
The garden
A terrace runs along the facade of the former hunting lodge, overlooking a large free-form pond partially covered with water lilies and edged with aquatic planting. Beyond, a lawn extends, dotted with trees and tall shrubs. A large covered outdoor area near the pond completes the exterior arrangements.
Our opinion
A park through which water runs, its pond and mature trees framing views from every window — within it, a hunting lodge and a bourgeois house of two different centuries have found a natural accord. The terrace extends the drawing rooms into the garden; architecture and landscape hold a continuous conversation. The winding staircase, period joinery and parquet confirm the classical register throughout. A stone's throw from Dourdan's historic centre, this is a family property whose grounds are its greatest asset.
