Saint-Gengoux-le-National, SAONE-ET-LOIRE burgundy 71460 FR

Location

This house, which is located between Cluny and Chalon-sur-Saône, is situated not far from the road linking Chalon-sur-Saône to Charolles and Cluny to Mâcon, only around 20 minutes from a junction on the A6 motorway. It is located in the upper part of the village and overlooks the green, wooded countryside, boasting far-ranging views over the surrounding landscape from its windows. Shops, services and amenities can be found nearby.

Description

The residence stands around a cobbled courtyard, bordered by its stone facades punctuated by basket-handle arched openings. A covered gallery topped by a wooden roof frame accentuates the house’s rural spirit and provides a transitional space between the inside and outside. Its overhanging eaves, wooden studs, and masonry guard-rails contribute to a sober silhouette inherited from its previous agricultural purpose. An external flight of stone steps, which stands against the property’s surrounding wall, is in keeping with the traditional layout of local village houses, with means of access running along the facades and providing independent entrances for the different levels. The exposed stonework encapsulates the authentic character of the original structure, with thick walls and ashlar door and window surrounds.

The house

It boasts simple and uncluttered volumes in which traditional materials such as stone and wood combine with a sober renovation, that is nonetheless respectful of the residence’s traditional character.

The ground floor
The house can be reached from the courtyard, leading to a technical installation room and a separate entrance, which in turn leads to a shower room and then, after several steps, the open and bright kitchen that boasts views of the surrounding nature. A staircase climbs upstairs from here and after the kitchen, an adjoining space equipped with a period brick fireplace is currently used as a bedroom. The walls are made of stone and the simple layout alludes to the domestic use of the place and its historic character.
The upstairs
The landing leads to a shower room, a separate lavatory and then two bedrooms, ensuring a transition between the stairs plus the corridors and the bedrooms, set one after another beneath the rafters. The thickness of the walls and irregular geometry of the original volumes are revealed through the exposed stonework and high, sloped ceilings. The windows are set deep into the walls, opening the rooms to the outside and enabling them to be generously bathed in light.

The annexes

These buildings are made up of a boiler room, storage space next to a carport and a self-contained room. They are fluidly laid out around the property to facilitate its everyday use. The carport, which has been recently renovated and its space optimised, has the capacity for several vehicles. Next to it, the raised patio is an outward-looking exterior space boasting uninterrupted views of the surrounding countryside. A secure and separate garage completes the outbuildings. It can be reached from the outside but is also linked to the boiler room.

The exterior

The land is divided into three distinct plots. In front of the residence, a patio leads to a flowery walled garden. To the rear, a larger second garden resembles a traditional vegetable garden. Lastly, a wooded plot can be reached on foot from the house and completes the property’s land, bestowing it with a piece of a more natural environment.

Our opinion

This house is set apart without being isolated, is conducive to rest and contemplation, is open to the surrounding landscape and is a peaceful haven standing between the vines and countryside. In short, it is a select address where the peace and quiet of a rural lifestyle can be enjoyed. It has been carefully renovated by the current occupants and can be moved into immediately. As such, it can be preserved as it is or converted according to future occupants’ desires, to optimise its interior layout and/or make the most of certain existing volumes.
