An 18th-century city dwelling and its walled garden,
near Bayeux’s famous cathedral
Bayeux, CALVADOS lower-normandy 14400 FR

Location

Within the Calvados department and not far from Normandy’s D-Day beaches, the ducal city of Bayeux, spared from the torments of the last century, spreads out peacefully around its cathedral. Here, the Middle Ages and the Age of the Enlightenment harmoniously coexist in a unique atmosphere, while, along its streets winding around the Aure River, 15th-century timber-framed dwellings and elegant private mansions, nestled between courtyards and gardens, are accessible via immense Caen stone gates, which help protect their privacy by sheltering them from view.
Famous for its tapestry, Bayeux cultivates a cosmopolitan identity and is both a peaceful subprefecture and a worldwide cultural landmark, while the dwelling itself is located on one of the oldest streets in Bayeux’s historical centre. With a green market every Saturday morning on the Place Saint-Patrice, Bayeux is only 15 minutes from Caen, via its train station – a ten-minute walk from the city centre – and 2.5 hours from Paris’s Saint-Lazare train station.

Description

Perched up in the heights of the city and built over a cellar, this four-storey dwelling, the last one of which is located under the eaves, features tall, symmetrical windows and doors highlighted by Caen stone surrounds, while its slate gable roof is punctuated with dormers. With each of its floors extending over approximately 40 m², the dwelling, facing north-south, is nestled between the street and its garden, while the latter, enclosed and sheltered from the city’s rumblings, is made up of a grassy area and a gravel patio.

The Ground Floor

An entrance hallway, extending from the dwelling’s front door all the way to the rear garden, features cement tile floors and a ceiling cadenced by coffered moulding, while, past the threshold, a door opens, on one side, on to a living room with oak herringbone parquet floors. Two windows with ancient cremone locking devices face the street, whereas a large door provides access to the dining room where two tall windows face the garden and a veined red marble fireplace is topped with a trumeau panel.
Extending on from here, a doorway communicates with a kitchen with a chequered-pattern cement tile floor, while a glass door gives on to the patio as does a double casement window and, in the back, a small pantry with a window comes with an antique double stone sink.

The First Floor

Facing the staircase, an initial bedroom comes with a veined black marble fireplace, two tall windows, looking out towards the garden as well as the neighbouring slate roofs, and a pine parquet floor, while a second bedroom, with a Versailles panel oak parquet floor and moulded wood panelling, features a garnet marble fireplace topped with a trumeau panel as well as two double casement windows that both enjoy views of the cathedral in the background. Following on from here is a shower room with a double casement window giving on to the garden, a vintage-looking pedestal washbasin with a linen skirt as well as a tiled partition, which separates the shower from the rest of the room.

The Second Floor

With the same layout as the lower floor, it is accessible from the staircase, framed by a deep semi-circular arch. Here, an initial bedroom with pine parquet floors and a veined black marble fireplace, facing its door, comes with a double casement window with original ironwork that looks out on to the garden, while, following on from here, an immense second bedroom, also with pine parquet floors, boasts a view of the cathedral from its pair of double casement windows, as well as a grey marble fireplace topped with a large gilded mirror. Next to these two bedrooms, a sunny bathroom with a small stone fireplace, porcelain washbasin and a freestanding bathtub, features visible ceiling joists, pine parquet floors as well as a window.

The Third Floor

Equipped with storage cupboards, an initial room, with a limestone tile floor and visible ceiling joists, faces the staircase and could be used as a wardrobe, while a dormer gives on to the city’s rooftops. Extending on from the hallway, a bedroom, with a sloping ceiling and wide-plank blond parquet floors, is flooded in light thanks to two dormers with views of the cathedral’s gothic spires and stained glass windows, whereas the hallway also features a dormer window on one side and, on the other, several steps that lead to the attic.

The Garden

Enclosed by dry stone walls and flanked on either side by adjoining historic dwellings, the garden features the vestiges of two antique columns, abutting an ashlar stone wall, which also recall Bayeux’s thousand-year-old history. Planted with oleanders, lilacs, rosebushes and hydrangeas, the garden also boasts a gravel patio, enclosed on either end by a low perpendicular wing, the latter of which include, on one side, a kitchen and, on the other, a utility room.

The Utility Room

Accessible via a small-paned glazed wooden door, followed by a few steps, this room has a travertine stone floor and visible whitewashed joists. Extending on from here, a hallway provides access to a lavatory, while an additional lavatory can also be found next to this utilitarian space.

The Workshop

Next to the utility room and built on a flagstone walkway, this wooden building features a wide rectangular window and makes it possible to store the garden’s tools and furniture.

Our opinion

Within this Norman episcopal city, in the shadow of one of the country’s oldest cathedrals, this tall and elegant Norman dwelling and its enclosed garden boasts exteriors as well as interior spaces adorned with stunning decorative details, which bear witness to the premises’ multi-century and storied history.
The result is a stately dwelling, which exudes a refined and peaceful ambiance, while its interior is drenched in sunlight thanks to its many windows and dormers, which provide enchanting views of the city’s rooftops as well as the stained glass of the cathedral’s venerable and towering nave.
