Location
Nestled within the countryside, the property, surrounded by woods and pastureland, is only five minutes away from local shops and thirty minutes from Poitiers and its high-speed rail station, which provides access to Paris or Bordeaux in one hour and 15 minutes. Recognised as a City of art and history, Poitiers’ many universities help it stay particularly youthful, while, in addition to its array of museums and contemporary art galleries, the city also features a national theatre. Last, but not least, La Rochelle is one hour and 45 minutes away by car and each summer a classical musical festival is held not far from the property.
Description
As for the large outbuilding, converted into an artist's studio and an exhibition space, it features a variety of spaces and volumes, while the building containing the garage, bakehouse and former pigsties is mainly used for storage, but could be renovated for another purpose, and the covered, open storage area makes it possible to store the equipment for the garden's upkeep.
The Dwelling
The ground floor
The front door opens on to a foyer, which provides access to a dining room, a kitchen, two bedrooms, a bathroom, a lavatory and a staircase to the upstairs floor. With mostly contemporary tiled floors throughout the dwelling, except for the bedrooms, which are carpeted, the dining room features a wood-burning stove and opens on to the garden via a glass door, as does the living room, while the kitchen also provides access to the garden as well as a furnace room, located outside of the dwelling.
The first floor
Accessible from the staircase in the foyer, this level includes a wide landing, four bedrooms, three of which are unheated, a shower room and a lavatory, while the floors are mostly carpeted except for one of the bedrooms, which has been transformed into an artist’s studio and features linoleum flooring.
The Barn
Partially transformed into an artist's studio and an exhibition space by the current occupant, it is also used to hold concerts. Built out of plaster-coated stone around a wooden framework, its central structure, flanked on one side by former cowsheds and, on the other, by former stables, features cement floors on either side and a beaten earth ground for its central section.
The Bakehouse, Former Pigsties and the Covered, Open Storage Area
Assembled under one roof, along with a garage, this building, featuring plaster-coated stone exteriors and a tile roof, has been cleaned in order to be used as another exhibition space, while, set back a little further, a covered open storage area makes it possible to store larger equipment.
The Garden
Planted with different kinds of ancient trees, such as oaks, horse chestnuts and walnuts, the garden also includes an orchard with plums, cherries, apples. Surrounded by hedges in large part, near the dwelling, a well, 45 metres deep, provides plenty of water for the property.
Our opinion
Nestled within the bucolic Vienne department, and surrounded by tall trees and hedges, this renovated farm has been transformed into a breath-taking artists’ residence. As for the property, with its immense outbuildings, it contains sizeable accommodations, as well as spaces dedicated to both creativity and exhibits, and could either remain a sanctuary for artists or welcome a family in search of a home surrounded by the great outdoors.
