Our opinion

Hydra rejected roads. It was a conscious decision — to remain a port island, not a destination for road travellers. In 1925, when this house was built, the harbour was the entire economy. The three storeys face out to sea because that is where the wealth arrived. The families who lived here counted the boats, not the hours. The wood of the shutters takes on a blue hue over time — that is the patina of the Saronic Gulf. The absence of cars is no longer a limitation: it is a choice. Ninety-nine years after it was built, the house embodies that choice: to remain rooted in the harbour, to gaze out at the water, to accept that the island dictates its own rules. It is an act of loyalty to a place that has never wavered.
