A 19th-century manor on the outskirts of a village
near Mont-Saint-Michel, in the south of the Manche department
Granville, MANCHE brittany 50400 FR

Location

The property is located on the outskirts of a Norman village and not far from a larger town of 3,500 inhabitants with numerous shops, a weekly green market and medical services. In addition, a port town, only 15 minutes away by car, and its train station provide rail service to Paris in 3 hours, the same amount of time it takes to reach the capital by car via the A84 motorway.

Description

Along the edge of a B road, on the outskirts of a village, a lane bordered by conifers leads to the property’s entrance, accessible via an automatic gate and framed by two ashlar stone pillars topped with capitals. Grass-covered, wall-enclosed landscaped grounds surround the estate, while a long outbuilding is located off to one side.
Built out of granite stone, the rectangular manor house’s northern and southern exteriors are practically identical, cadenced by five windows upstairs and topped in the middle by a pediment, while the windows that frame the front door on the house’s northern side have been replaced by glass doors on its southern counterpart. With a flagstone patio that extends in front of the dwelling’s southern exterior, the manor is crowned with a slate hipped roof, decorated with a frieze, and punctuated by two gable dormer windows, two tall chimneys on either end as well as two smaller ones on the house’s roof ridge. In addition, the building’s date of construction, 1804, visible above the front door, is engraved into a granite lintel and topped with a coat of arms.

The Manor House

The ground floor
The front door opens onto an entrance hall with a flagstone floor that provides access, on one side, to a kitchen and a dining room, which share the same dual-aspect space and are bathed in light thanks to two windows and two sets of glass doors. With flagstone floors, the room’s visible ceiling joists are painted white, while, on the other side, the entrance hall leads to a double, dual-aspect living room with a fireplace and a terracotta tile floor.
The first floor
From the entrance hall, a staircase provides access to an intermediary landing, which leads to a lavatory on one side and a bedroom with its own shower room on the other. Following on from here is an immense sunny landing with a window, which leads, on one side, to a bedroom with a bathroom and lavatory, and, on the other, to a bedroom with a shower room and lavatory.
The attic
Accessible from the staircase, this level includes the gas furnace as well as three unconverted spaces.

The Outbuildings

Built out of rubble stone, the largest one is located on the eastern side of the grounds. Primarily reserved for storage, it has four doors and two shed dormer windows, while, on either side of the entrance gate, two small buildings are used for either storage or the property’s wastewater treatment equipment.

The Grounds

Covered in lawn and planted with a variety of trees and shrubs, including weeping willows and birches as well as flowering vegetation, an ornamental pond is located along its southern wall.

Our opinion

This traditional slate and granite Norman manor, the time-honoured architecture of which creates a bridge between the 18th and 19th century, has not only been meticulously maintained, but blends in harmoniously with the surrounding countryside. With a recent and thorough interior facelift including high-quality amenities and materials, its exteriors are cadenced by wide windows that bathe the living areas in abundant sunlight and provide unobstructed views of the immense, enclosed landscaped grounds planted with a number of remarkable trees. Lastly, the property’s location near the bay of Mont-Saint-Michel, and only three hours from Paris, promise a wide range of activities and uses for this breath-taking estate.
