Our opinion
A residence in the hamlet of Benville, built in the 18th century. Initially a country retreat before becoming a true manor house away from the hustle and bustle, it offered its owners — gentleman farmers, local dignitaries and landowning families — a haven of peace with its honey-coloured stone, thatched roof and Georgian architecture. But it is perhaps its preserved authenticity that makes it so unique: original sash windows, oak beams on the ceiling and Blue-lias stone slabs bear witness to ancestral craftsmanship. Beneath successive layers of flooring, the pine floors have re-emerged intact, bearing the memory of the generations who walked on them. A living heritage and a gentle refuge in rural Dorset, Benville House combines grace and elegance in a timeless setting.
