Our opinion
Inside the fortress of Valença, a National Monument since 1910, a 19th-century neoclassical palace stands facing the Minho River and Tui Cathedral. Built by the Baron of Urgeira for his daughter, the complex includes the main residence and a historic annex, formerly a six-suite residence. The palace retains its original features: a Manueline carved stone fireplace, a French marble fireplace and solid wood floors. Seven bedrooms, six bathrooms, a library and living rooms occupy the interior spaces. The romantic gardens are home to camellias, magnolias and the rare Bela Portuguesa rose. The annex, which retains its original architectural features, could be converted into accommodation, a workshop or a gallery. Located between Porto and Vigo, thirty-five minutes from the Galician airport, the property will appeal to those looking for a place steeped in history in a stronghold that is a candidate for UNESCO World Heritage status.
