Location
This house is located in the Île-de-France region, around 20 kilometres southeast of Paris, in the Essonne area, in a meander of the River Yerres on the edge of the Sénart Forest. The town, which enjoys special living environment, was formerly a seigniorial fiefdom and part of the royal estate. It was of particular appeal to the great and good of the kingdom, as well as artists later on, who helped to transform it into a destination for relaxation in the late 19th century. The residences, which are still present today, pay witness to its rich past. The municipality boasts all essential services and shops. It is several minutes on foot from the town-centre and from a train station on the RER network, as well as close to the A6 motorway, N6 and N7 main roads and Francilienne outer ring road. The French capital can be reached in 30 minutes from the RER station.
Description
The light-coloured rendered facades are bordered by quoins and underlined by pearl grey stringcourses, giving the residence its distinctive character. Each window is protected by a wrought-iron guard-rail adorned with delicate motifs. The double-leaf entrance door is surrounded by a classical frame and topped by a discrete entablature. The roof made of dark coloured tiles is punctuated by hipped dormers, which are typical of noble rural architecture. Lastly, next to the residence, there is an outbuilding, which is a similarly styled caretaker’s house. Both stand in middle of an ornamental garden.
The house
The ground floor
The dual aspect entrance is generously bathed in light. The walls are adorned with wood panelling on both the lower as well as upper parts and the hall leads to several rooms on the ground floor.
Firstly, there is a fitted kitchen, bathed in light through a side window, with wide stripped oakwood flooring. It opens into a large lounge into which light streams through small-paned, tall windows. A marble fireplace with red veining topped by a large, old mirror dominates the room. The ceiling is bordered by moulded cornices, while wainscotting runs around the entire room, affirming its classical character. Next to the lounge, a large, basket handle shaped archway opens into the dining room, which is followed by an office and a pantry overlooking the garden to complete this level.
The first floor
A spiral wooden staircase in a narrow stairwell bathed in light climbs to the upper floors.
On the first floor, a vast landing leads to a bathroom with a lavatory. The room is structured around the gentle shapes of the bath and the double washbasin embedded in a solid wood countertop. A first bedroom stands opposite this bathroom and its walls are adorned with moulded wainscotting. There are straight stripped oakwood flooring and a finely sculpted cornice around the comfortably high ceiling. On each side of a corridor in which the doors and large skirting boards stand out, there are three other bedrooms one after another, as well as a modern bathroom, all decorated in a similar style. Lastly, this level has two areas of wardrobe space.
The second floor
The landing leads to the rooms in the same layout as on the level below. Firstly, there is a modern bathroom of monastic simplicity that draws on the house’s strong lines by enhancing the exposed trusses and joists. Opposite, there is a first bedroom beneath the rafters followed by two others. The ceiling of the first follows the slope of the roof, with the interplay of the joists and purlins creating a dynamic perspective. The second is bathed in light thanks to its double-leaf windows and ample volumes. The painted wood stripped flooring is light-coloured, while the dark wooden beams evoke the residence’s original structure. This level is completed by a vast room revealing the building’s original structure. It is used as a loft and its untreated state allows a free reign for the imagination as regards how to convert it.
The basement
This level can be reached from inside the house and is mainly made up of a series of adjacent rooms: a utility room, a space which could be transformed into a fitness room, a wine cellar and a final room that currently houses the boiler.
The caretaker’s house
The outbuildings are made up of an approximately 46-m² caretaker’s house. The ground floor includes an entrance hall leading to a lounge and a kitchen. On the upper floor, there is a bedroom decorated in pared-down style, with wood stripped flooring, as well as a bathroom. The house also has two adjoining rooms that can be reached from the outside, which could be used as an independent office and as a storeroom, or be converted into a workshop.
The garden
It is enclosed by walls, dense hedges and tall trees. It boasts lush countryside vegetation, including roses and perennial plants as well as many types of trees, such as olive, bamboo and lime, amongst others. A bronze sculpture provides an artistic and poetic touch to the greenery.
Our opinion
This residence is the ultimate in 19th-century bourgeois style and boasts all the advantages of a veritable haven of greenery and tranquillity in a town-centre location, several minutes on foot from the railway station and walks along the banks of the River Yerres. The building exudes the utmost nobility of the impressionist era thanks to the quality of its architecture and its elegance.
It is very well suited to the expectations of a large family but also boasts remarkable potential for extension in view of a professional project, thanks to around 400 m² of the plot that can be built upon, in the middle of the town.
