Location
This property is located in an environment combining the ocean, dunes and wooded areas, near to the Pointe de Chaucre cape, in the northwest of the Île d’Oléron, in the Charente-Maritime area. One of the island's most beautiful beaches less than 400 metres away as well as several seafront establishments can be reached on foot. The surrounding villages and different sectors of the island are not far away by car. Saint-Georges-d’Oléron and its shops are only several kilometres away. Via the bridge between the island and mainland, Rochefort can be reached in approximately 45 minutes, while La Rochelle is a little more than 1 hour away.
Description
The main house
The upper part of the house is occupied by the reception rooms. The living room combines a lounge section and dining area beneath an exposed roof frame. In the centre of the room, there is a wood-burning stove, while wide openings lead out onto a patio overlooking the garden. Next to the living room, a kitchen leads to a second patio where there is a summer kitchen with a barbecue. The flooring in the living spaces is mainly made up of terracotta tiles.
An indoor staircase leads down to the lower level. The landing at the bottom leads to a bathroom, two bedrooms and a spare bedroom, followed by a hallway leading to a shower room as well as a bedroom. There is a combination of flexible flooring and terracotta tiles.
The self-contained edifice
It is made up of a living room with an open-plan kitchen, plus a bedroom and a shower room. Thanks to its independence, it could fulfil a variety of purposes, for example, to welcome family and friends, serve as an independent workspace or be used for seasonal rental accommodation.
The grounds
They are one of the property’s main assets and are laid out on relief that is unusual on the island, combining undergrowth, clearings, stone walls and rocky outcrops. The paths wind through the maritime pines and evergreen oaks, hugging the natural incline of the land without altering its character. Carpets of moss, pine needles and coastal vegetation contribute to an unexpected forest atmosphere only several minutes from the ocean. In spite of the presence of other houses in the neighbourhood, the density of the vegetation provides a sense of privacy. From the patios as well as the various levels of the plot, the view mainly takes in the trees and the light filtering through their canopy.
Our opinion
This property very near to the Pointe de Chaucre cape is unique due not particularly to its architecture but is location. The relief of the land, the presence of woods and the closeness to the ocean serve to create a property that is more or less one of a kind on the coast of the Île d’Oléron. It has been preserved in its original state and well maintained over time. Today, the house could serve as an interesting basis for an architectural reinterpretation or modernisation. Future occupants will therefore be able to adapt the place to the purposes they desire and preserve the qualities of a site whose character draws chiefly on its relationship with nature.
