Our opinion
In the 13th century, the Knights Templar chose this rocky outcrop to build a castle. The choice was strategic. It was also aesthetically pleasing—from Monsaraz, the view stretches all the way to the Spanish border without any obstructions. Inside the 17th-century walls, a house embodies several centuries of domestic life without prioritizing one era over another. The cauldron in the kitchen fireplace sits alongside handcrafted mosaics. The domes echo the granite. Slate covers what the stone does not reveal. Below, Lake Alqueva. Above, the Alentejo sky.
