Our opinion
In 1958, Lord Snowdon inherited a ruin. His uncle Oliver Messel, whose name remains associated with London’s greatest stages, gave him—on the occasion of his marriage to Princess Margaret—a residence dating from 1481 that was abandoned, dilapidated, but still standing. What Lord Snowdon did with these walls is worth mentioning: he listened to them. The bricked-up windows were reopened. The Tudor beams reappeared. The open-hearth fireplace, once a bread oven, regained its place at the heart of the hall. A library became his photography darkroom. A balcony salvaged from the royal box at Ascot became an architectural whim in the garden. Subsequent owners have continued this dialogue with the same insight. A home that has never ceased to be what it was in 1481.
