Our opinion
On 7 October 1558, in Constantinople, a notary from Ciutadella who had been taken captive, Pere Quintana, recorded in Catalan an account of the siege and a list of the prisoners. His town had just been sacked. It slowly recovered behind its ramparts and grew accustomed to looking inwards, until the walls fell in the 19th century. A house in the Sant Miquel neighbourhood has preserved this way of life. Its façade faces the street, but its heart beats around a courtyard. The marès stone walls, cement tiles and ancient floor tiles have endured through the generations. At the centre, a staircase connects the floors like a backbone. A city that had looked inwards for so long could not have been built any other way.
