Our opinion
In 1558, an Ottoman fleet besieged Ciutadella for eight days before completely plundering it, deporting nearly four thousand inhabitants to Constantinople. The island, long exposed, had to relearn how to live differently—by retreating inland, far from the coastline, which was all too visible from the sea. This estate still seems to bear the memory of that retreat, so far from everything that no road disturbs it. A dry-stone hut, a threshing floor, a safareig for storing water: each structure belongs to this rural Menorca that eventually flourished far from the ramparts, in a discretion that, over time, became its best protection.
