Our opinion
Büyükdere means “big stream,” a reminder of a river that no longer exists but once flowed into the Bosphorus at this very spot. In the 19th century, the name primarily referred to a refuge: that of the embassies in Istanbul, which established their summer residences there to escape the heat of the city center, leaving behind homes with architecture that was unexpected for a simple fishing village. One house belongs to this very generation of buildings. Its projecting bay windows, sash windows, high ceilings, and original hardwood floors have stood the test of time without losing that somewhat solemn character, inherited from an era when people built here as much to entertain as to live.
