On Lanzarote, rain is scarce, and it was the volcano that taught the farmers to manage without it. They covered their fields with picón, that black lava gravel which retains moisture and protects the soil from the sun. What had once burnt everything to a cinder has become the very thing that makes crops grow. In Las Cabreras, a rural village in the municipality of Teguise, a terraced house has also been given a new lease of life. Fully restored, its garden and terraces look out over the volcanic landscape and, beyond that, the Atlantic, with nothing to obstruct the view. On this island, the black earth is not seen as a ruin, but as a new beginning.
