Our opinion
An old locksmith's workshop converted into a home, this is what lies hidden in the old town of Elvas, a World Heritage Site. The 120 m² house climbs up the fortified hill, facing south and the Spanish plains. No direct neighbours. The patios lead to the açoteia, where you can enjoy a 360-degree view of the Alentejo rooftops. The immaculate white walls complement the Estremoz cement tiles, 19th-century Lisbon azulejos and hand-modelled Islamic ornaments. The original forge remains in the patio and can be used as a fireplace in winter. The staircase leading to the mezzanine and then to the terrace is the only change in level, which is rare in these old buildings. Living here means loving rooftops, sunshine and history.
