Location
At the heart of the capital, the Marais is one of the most history-laden districts in Paris. Its urban development began as early as the late 12th century. Laid out in the 17th century under Louis XIII, within the vast Ville Neuve du Temple scheme, Rue de Poitou is lined with noble facades and hidden courtyards, where contemporary art galleries, designer boutiques, and discreet terraces come together. The Marché des Enfants-Rouges, the oldest market in Paris, is a short walk away. Listed in the catalogue of historic monuments, it has traded since 1615. Reminiscent of a village square and warmly convivial, the market gathers a wide variety of food stalls around communal tables. The Filles du Calvaire and Saint-Sébastien-Froissart métro stations, both on line 8, are about 300 m away.
Description
The entrance opens straight into what was once the dining room. Opposite, the almost 25 m² main room faces due south, drawing abundant light from three windows that frame a poetic view over the Paris rooftops. A bathroom and a windowed lavatory adjoin it. The remaining rooms hold a spacious kitchen also overlooking the rooftops, a lavatory and a south-facing bedroom with period terracotta tiles. A second entrance door leads to the staircase of the adjoining building. Heating and hot water are electric throughout.
Our opinion
In one of the most coveted quarters of Paris, this apartment makes an alluring and quiet retreat from the animated streets around it. The Marché des Enfants-Rouges, the Picasso Museum, designer boutiques, fine food, culture and fashion all gather in this spirited quarter, young in its population yet rooted in long-standing tradition and history. Its remarkable natural light and rooftop views straight out of The Aristocats count among the draws. Historic and fashionable, and once fully renovated, its character will more than satisfy the enthusiast who takes it on.
