At the corner of the street and what was probably a towpath, the house overlooks the river. Surrounded by a walled garden with a few tall trees and thick laurel bushes, there is an air of the countryside here, just an hour from the capital. Staying here in a bed and breakfast will give you a taste of the holiday spirit of the late 19th century, the era of "guinguettes”, straw boaters, parasols and bustles. Visiting artists will certainly be inspired by their famous Impressionist predecessors who immortalised the area so many times. Whether it's good weather or the depths of winter, it is an ideal refuge for city dwellers in search of peace and fresh air.
I've lived in this Anglo-Norman house for as long as I can remember. I chose to stay in this property because of my family's attachment to it, but also because of the quality of life and its proximity, just an hour from Paris, which is essential for my business.
The architecture of this property shows off its unique history. Originally, it was a vast garage designed to house large limousines, built in the early 19th century by a wealthy industrialist family. Built like a farmhouse with a riveted IPN metal frame, the space was designed without internal posts, providing a free, solid structure. The wall facing the street is solid and load-bearing, while the attic space, once used as a maid's room, has been redesigned to create light and spacious rooms. This atypical space blends industrial charm and residential elegance, in a respectful and inspired transformation.
Facing the Ile de la Grenouillère - the birthplace of Impressionism immortalised by Monet - this residence is set in a historic landscape. Once a favourite haunt of the Parisian bourgeoisie who came to enjoy the guinguettes on the banks of the Seine, the district stands out for its vast estates built during the Belle Époque. Behind these prestigious houses stretched the fields of market gardeners who supplied the halles de Paris, giving the town a coat of arms adorned with baskets of carrots. This house is the embodiment of this unique past, at the crossroads of the arts, the elegant holiday resort and the nourishing land.
A peaceful break on the outskirts of Paris, surrounded by history and nature. Situated in Croissy-sur-Seine, this remarkably peaceful house is hidden from the main roads. The town centre has now been redeveloped and is packed with cafés, shops, bakeries and popular markets. Visitors staying here will discover a perfect starting point for exploring the impressionist history of the banks of the Seine, between the Bougival bridge and the Maison Fournaise. Just ten metres from the river, the house offers peace and quiet, greenery and direct access to the Seine loop, ideal for walking, cycling or relaxing. I'm a sound engineer specialised in cultural audio guides, and I'd would like to share my knowledge of the surrounding heritage with you, with simplicity and passion.
Here is a selection of little known places to discover: "L'Auberge du Fruit Défendu" in Rueil, on the banks of the Seine, with a terrace overlooking the water; "Ban Me", a Laotian restaurant hidden away in the hills above Bougival; "Le Petit Chez Soi", in La Celle-Saint-Cloud, offering family-style cuisine; and "Le Coq de Bougival", with its fairytale decor, perfect for families. "Chez Chou", at the Château de Chanorier in Croissy-sur-Seine. The young chef, Charlie Anne, an outstanding finalist in Top Chef 2025, has created a personal, lively, sensitive menu rooted in his Norman roots. For a countryside picnic, head for the landscaped banks of Carrières-sur-Seine or Port-Marly. And everywhere, nature, the art of living, walks and a gentle way of life that is rare at the gateway to Paris.
