The old farmhouse, with its granite stone walls topped with slate roofs forms a U-shape. It seems to open its arms full of flowering bushes in the summer months. This generous welcome extends to the interior of the gites and guest rooms, where a carefree holiday spirit reigns. All you have to do is allow yourself to be gently intoxicated by the scents of the sea and the ever-changing light to feel alive again and want to explore this part of Brittany, which is between the Bay of Saint-Brieuc and Paimpol. There is so much to discover here!
I have a long personal history with this part of Brittany. My ancestors came from Plélo, just a few kilometres from Kerégal, the hamlet we live in. I spent my childhood holidays here. The Côtes d'Armor is a land of contrasts, that changes with each new season. The smells, flavours and landscapes left a lasting impression on me. When it was time to go home, I was always sad to leave. A few years later, when we were on a big trip travelling around Europe for several months, the opportunity came up to buy the Kerégal gites. No sooner said than done. We travelled up through Greece and then Italy to finally settle down here. It was an easy decision to make for us and our children, who were always asking us why we had to leave when we got back on the road to go home after a week's holiday in Kerégal. Nowadays our family is very much rooted here in the midst of simplicity and nature.
The Kerégal gites overlook the sea from the cliffs and are surrounded by fertile soil that is enriched by seaweed and maerl. From the first floor of what used to be the stables a few centuries ago, you can enjoy the evening light over the fields and the central courtyard, with its well and pigsties that have kept the building's identity intact. The soft plaster alcoves of the dormers give each room a private feel. The paved courtyard provides independent access to each house, while preserving the overall charm and unity of the property. High-quality renovation materials ensure a perfect marriage between the different eras of the buildings. Private gardens for each of the gites provide additional privacy. As for the main house, it sits at the bottom of the garden, looking rather like an English cottage, with its antique glass roof and Bruges brick base. At the back of the reception area, you can make out the old bread oven on the gable, which is visible from the path leading to the beach. Finally, the garden, enclosed by granite walls and low fences, lets land and sea flourish together at every moment of the year.
The main building, completed in 1789, was a family farm until the early 21st century. 20 years ago, it was taken over by a couple who saw the potential in the layout of the buildings for the wonderful property it would become. They were the founders of the Kerégal gites. The husband tastefully renovated them and the wife welcomed guests. We are following in their footsteps, while breathing our own identity into the location.
We are committed to welcoming our guests in a spirit of conviviality and respect for privacy at the same time. The property's setting makes you feel like you are in a little corner away from the rest of the world. Our guests will find peace and serenity here, as well as the beauty and charm of Brittany. The cliffs and beach are a ten-minute walk away. At the Kerégal gites, we offer breakfasts and brunches all year round by prior arrangement, as well as a welcome basket made entirely from local, organically grown fruit and vegetables. As well as welcoming tourists, during the autumn and spring we provide accommodation for participants in fasting and hiking sessions accompanied by a naturopath, gourmet weekends based around natural wine, and residences dedicated to reflection and the design of artistic projects.
The long Palus beach is within walking distance and has exceptional views every single day. The cliff walks are breath taking. The "Crêperie des Falaises" on the beach car park is a firm favourite with locals and tourists alike. "Les Viviers de St Marc" in Treveneuc, a family-run fishery, has a separate fish market and restaurant area, also accessible via the coastal path. A trip to the "Char à Banc" in Plélo is a must. This authentic farmhouse inn is a local institution that has been serving the Lamour family's wood-fired potée (food cooked in earthenware pot) for generations. As well as tasty food, you can go bargain-hunting in the chic basement flea market, admire the working water wheel, go pedal-boating on the river, or have fun all afternoon with the children in the park at the end of the valley. You can sit on a bench in the sublime vegetable garden, whose produce is the basis of the inn's dishes. For the more adventurous, the island of Bréhat, the Sillon de Talbert, Beauport Abbey and the charming villages on the banks of the Trieux are just a short distance away.
