In a region where nature showcases its finery amidst winding valleys, deep forests and wild rivers, this former mill seems determined to shelter itself from the world. Far from any habitation and nestled in the bend of the river, it appears at the end of a path, wrapped around a closed courtyard. The brightness of the white facades offsets the dark shades of the slate roofs and surrounding hardwoods. If feels as though time has been suspended for centuries here. And yet, the recently converted guest house at L'Autre Eden offers a most contemporary living environment that masterfully combines the relics of a distant past with the refinement of modern comfort down to the smallest detail.
After working as florists for twenty-five years in Luxembourg City, we were ready for a new adventure in the heart of nature. The Elzbach, the river which surrounds the mill, is a tributary on the left bank of the Moselle and a sub-tributary of the Rhine. It gave its name to the rocky and wooded valley of Elzbach, a border region of Luxembourg, France and Belgium between Moselle and Rhine, that is home to wild nature and an architectural heritage that enchanted us.
The building, a 15th century mill, has retained its original rustic appearance. The inner courtyard is bordered by the river which once fed the mill.
From 1450 to 1975, the mill belonged to the same family. Until 1939, wheat and flax were produced here. We bought the property in 2017 and have just completed its restoration with respect for the original plans. We have created a refined marriage between the old and the conveniences of the new.
A property surrounded by nature. The Elzbach is a rocky and wildly romantic valley, ideal for long hikes. At the mill, a sunny terrace overlooking the Elz and various seating areas invite guests to relax and linger a while. Each room has a unique décor and layout. The breakfasts are generous and for dinner in the evening, a table d'hôtes serves meals prepared with organic, regional products and fruits and vegetables grown with care in the large vegetable garden next to the mill.
The Münstermaifeld fortified church with a Renaissance altar. The Maria Laach Abbey Church is one of the most remarkable examples of German Romanesque religious architecture. You can listen to the Gregorian chants of the Benedictine monks several times a day. The Sainte-Geneviève chapel with a 13th century high altar surrounded by wheat fields in Fraukirch. A walk along the “Eltzer Burgpanorama” or “Pyrmonter Felsensteig” paths to discover the beauty and originality of the nature surrounding the Elzbach. The Jakobsweg section, a pilgrimage route on the road to Saint Jacques de Compostela, is particularly remarkable. The Pyrmont Mill waterfall (the largest waterfall in the Eifel mountains), the castles of Eltz and Pyrmont, and the half-timbered town of Monreal are also not to be missed.
195 € - 280 € per night
The mill offers a suite consisting of a bedroom, a bathroom and a large living room with a panoramic window and a view of the water and the steep cliffs of the Elz. The other three spacious double bedrooms each have an en suite bathroom or shower. A sauna area with a relaxation room is also available to guests.
