The former church and its adjoining house, decked out in stone and topped with canal tiles, are hidden amongst vineyards in one of the bends of the River Lamone as if they want to be left in peace and quiet. Everything here has been reconfigured to welcome travellers in an atmosphere of exquisite intimacy, sheltered by ancient cypress trees, the aroma of lavender and the lapping of the water in the pool. Inside, the softly tinted rendered walls reveal some frescoes and lead through to the welcome cool of pleasantly shaded rooms. Here, there is little other to do than allow yourself to relax, with no other constraints other than having to make up your mind about what you would like to discover in Emilia-Romagna.
After many years sat behind desks in Milan, we were looking for a life that was closer to nature. So we explored Emilia-Romagna, a part of Italy that is set off the beaten track. The food and wine are excellent, the hills and mountains to the south have superb hiking and cycling trails, and a picturesque railway line links Faenza to Florence in an hour and a half. When we came across Baccagnano, an abandoned church and house in the foothills of Brisighella, we immediately knew that this was the ideal location for us. I planted a vineyard around the property 13 years ago and built the cellar where we produce our wines.
Agriturismo Baccagnano is the ancient stone complex built in the 13th century around the church dedicated to San Nicola, which is now the living and dining room of our guest house. The property is surrounded by vineyards, orchards and two ancient cypress trees.
Baccagnano village and church appear in numerous historical documents concerning the Brisighella area. In the oldest document that can be consulted in the regional archives, the 1371 “Romandiole Description", commissioned for tax purposes by the papal legate at the time, Cardinal Anglic de Grimoard, brother of Pope Urban V, the complex is classified as a villa in a parish that had 52 inhabitants at the time, who belonged to the parish families at the time.
The church is a spacious and comfortable communal space where you can spend time listening to music on our old record player. The sacristy has been turned into a fully-fledged professional kitchen, equipped to serve up to 16 guests for dinner. The swimming pool faces the vineyards and the large grounds are equipped with outdoor furniture, a barbecue and welcome shade. We offer bike hire, guided treks and hikes, cookery classes, wine, oil and honey tastings and daily pickings in the vegetable garden. Faenza is close to Bologna and its airport, and the Adriatic Sea is just 50 minutes away.
In Brisighella you can enjoy an excellent gastronomic experience at "La Cavallina" or sample simple but delicious cuisine at "L'Osteria del Guercinoro". Stroll through Faenza and browse its contemporary ceramics shops. We love Elvira Keller and Monica Grycko. It's also an opportunity to enjoy a pizza in one of Italy's 50 best pizzerias, "O Fiore Mio." For an exceptional experience, "Le San Domenico" in Imola is a two Michelin starred restaurant. Visit Ravenna, to see its mosaics, the Mausoleo di Galla Placidia and San Vitale, and finish off with dinner at the Osteria del Tempo Perso or the more relaxed beachside restaurant "Maré” in Cesenatico.
