When we arrived in Thouars, it was love at first sight. Leaving Provence for the Deux-Sèvres came as a surprise to our friends and family, but what we found in Thouars could only be found here. It is a real privilege to live in a town house in the heart of the historic centre, just a stone's throw from Place Saint-Médard and overlooking the Thouet valley. Its total renovation took two years. The renovations carried out restored this 16th-century residence to its former discreet splendour and combined it with the pleasures of modern comforts. Every space and living area has been meticulously thought out. My professional skills as a decorator were put to the test and I went above and beyond to wake up this 'sleeping beauty'. As soon as the work was finished, we wanted to share it with other historic building enthusiasts and so La Demeure de l'Ange was born.
This town house was built in the second half of the 16th century. The right-hand wing is typical of the period. It features a 15th-century octagonal staircase turret with a pyramid roof, a door with an ogee above and windows in the same style or with basket handles, and a French-style slate roof. Its chestnut frame is shaped like the hull of a ship. The windows are moulded but have lost their cross shape (mullions). Situated in the most beautiful street in the town, this residence has undergone numerous transformations since the 16th century. The wing added in the 17th century features facades of brushed-cut tufa stone and a Mansard-style roof structure.
It is located along the Rue du Château, the most beautiful medieval street in the town and the former main road where people arriving from the south would travel on. This location suggests that the site once served as a coaching inn. Its former stables are linked to the former Clos Saint-Médard inn, which opens onto the church forecourt. The history of the owners of this residence can only be traced back to Count Redon de Beaupréau (1733-1815), an illustrious State Councillor, then Count of the Empire and Minister under Napoleon Bonaparte. He was succeeded by people of note, lawyers, notaries and jewellers. The "Cité Libre du Vieux Thouars" was founded in the courtyard of the house, and is now based in "La Maison du Père Jacques" opposite the church of Saint-Médard.
This town house is spread out over several wings and opens onto two private gardens which are out of public sight, giving the impression that you have a secluded life in the countryside, while still benefiting from the conveniences of being right in the heart of the historic centre. Each room has its own stylish signature look. The large Richelieu lounge and its library containing old and modern books, as well as the Marie Antoinette lounge, are available for our guests’ use. A suite with its own entrance and living room with kitchen is perfect for a long stay for two or three people. Our table d'hôtes offers a carefully prepared dinners using fresh local produce or produce from our kitchen garden.
Château de Oiron and its vast museum of contemporary art. The Château de Montreuil Bellay, a historic château combining medieval power, Renaissance refinement and a vineyard. The museum in the troglodyte village of Rochemenier offers visitors a tour of two of the forty former underground farms in the village. For sports enthusiasts, there is a vast 50-kilometre cycle route around a number of tourist attractions. Thouars market is not to be missed. Every Friday, a large number of market gardeners, poultry farmers, pork butchers and cheese-makers gather on the Place Lavaux, attracting customers from all over the region. The covered market, which is open every day, is a privilege enjoyed by the people of Thouars who visit in number. Numerous visits are organised in the town to discover Thouars' rich history.
