I come from the South-West and had a strong desire to go back to basics after living in Paris for twenty-five years. Having fallen in love with the Dordogne, we went looking for a large family home where we could welcome guests as we had done before on a smaller scale in our Parisian apartment. Looking for an authentic place, we sensed that the house and its 1.7 hectare park (which is unique in Sarlat) would be a unique place for rejuvenation and sharing with others.
It is a bourgeois villa at the edge of the town centre. It was built in 1881 and then completely remodelled in 1922 with the aim of providing modern comfort and adding a rock garden which was very much in fashion at the time. The house is listed as "remarkable" because certain architectural elements appear on the heritage list of Sarlat such as the gates, balconies, ironwork and joinery. During the work carried out under the direction of François Coq (a renowned architect in the region) in 2021, we took care to rehabilitate and magnify this heritage by preserving original features such as the parquet floors, cement tiles, mouldings, and fireplaces. We also extended the house with a large old-style veranda that opens onto the park.
The original house was built in 1881 by Noé Jaubert whose initials appear on the facade. Founder of a nursery of the same name which is still open to this day, he surrounded the residence with a vast park featuring multiple species of trees which are now hundreds of years old. Included is a remarkable collection of Californian white cedars as well as an Atlas cedar that stands 35 metres tall. The house was then acquired and redesigned by Joseph Souillac in 1922. A large family from Sarlat and owners of an eponymous tannery, the Souillacs left their mark on the house over a period of more than seventy years. Even at this time, families from Sarlat liked to meet here for lunch on Sundays under the large cedar or play tennis on the clay court which was installed by Joseph Souillac in the 1930s.
A rural environment which is nonetheless close to the Sarlat cathedral and to the city of Art and History located in the heart of the Périgord Noir's golden triangle. Guests will feel as though they are in a family home where everyone meets, engages with one another, and experiences those little moments that remind you what it is to be human. The reception rooms are accessible to everyone. On the park side, we were inspired to create a moving garden, an observatory of flora and fauna that promotes reconnection with nature. We offer optional access to a 25m² wellness area with a hammam, sauna and spa as well as the possibility of booking massages. Breakfasts consist of carefully selected products from local producers. We also provide electric bikes to rent, charging for electric vehicles and a laundry service. Comfort and authenticity are our magic words!
It is a difficult choice as all the "must-sees" are absolutely beautiful! Our recommendation is to let yourself come across places, moments or encounters by chance, just as we did when we discovered the Château de Biron shimmering like a mirage around a bend, or the Château des Milandes in low season. We have also discovered the porcini mushroom market in the Monpazier town hall, tasted good family dishes from Sigoules which is a worker's restaurant on the other side of our street, and savoured the inimitable cake made by Charlotte and Lionel's grandmother!
The bedrooms, located on the first and second floors without a lift, each have their own bathroom and are divided into three categories. L'Exclusive, with surface area of ??28m² and a private 12m² terrace, is equipped with a king size bed, a double sofa bed, and a minibar. Les Intimes, with a surface area of ??14m², is equipped with queen size beds. Les Spacieuses, with a surface area of 22m², is equipped with king size beds and, along with Les Intimes, has access to the common tea room on the first floor. On the ground floor, the reception rooms, library, living room, and dining room, are extended by a veranda where breakfast is served. In the basement, a 25m² wellness area with a hammam, sauna, spa and shower is accessible from the outside. The house is entirely non-smoking and reservations are for a minimum of two nights. Free parking with video surveillance is available within the grounds of the park. The layout of the house, perched on a rock and surrounded by high terraced walls, does not allow us to calmly accommodate young children.
