Surrounded by thick woods that form a first natural wall, the manor house has retained its defensive appearance behind its high granite walls and porch topped with machicolations. But the stone ornamentation and numerous small-paned windows, which were later added over the centuries, as well as the tree-lined courtyard, transform the premises into a refined residence where war is no longer a worry. The recent renovation strikes a subtle balance between modern touches and the original elements that have been preserved in different areas. Your stay here, between Quimper and Concarneau will undoubtedly follow the ebb and flow of the tides and the countless discoveries on offer in this region set between the land and the sea.
We wanted to be closer to the Atlantic coast and were looking for a building full of character to restore. Roaming from south of La Roche-sur-Yon to north of Brest, the buildings and landscapes guided us towards our final choice, South Finistère.
The manor house is typical of Breton medieval architecture, with stone walls, slate roofs and narrow openings. It still has its stone porch, a walled garden full of flowers, is lulled by the sound of the river and quite unusually has imposing fortification that illustrates the manor's original defensive function. It has a square rampart with battlements and loopholes, bordered by a parapet with machicolations and a watchtower at one of its corners. The spacious main house has several floors and features impressive fireplaces, exposed beams and mullioned windows.
The Moustoir manor house was built at the end of the 13th century and is believed to be a former commandery of the Knights Hospitallers of Saint-Jean-de-Jérusalem. Moustoir comes from the Breton "moster", meaning monastery, and Saint-Évarzec comes from "Trefidoc", a 6th century Breton saint. At the beginning of the 17th century, the seigneurial dwelling became the property of the Toutenoutre family, who preceded an illustrious line of descendants: Charles d'Arenberg and Louise Marguerite de La Marck, Elisabeth, Empress of Austria (Sissi), Marie-José, Queen of Italy, Albert II, King of the Belgians, and many other lucky people! In 2017, an extensive restoration programme was launched to transform it into a small hotel full of character.
