Following various border changes over the centuries this former Austrian region is now an Italian province. But this Italy is still steeped in its Tyrolean past and its significant German-speaking population. The sloping roofs designed to support the weight of the snow and the heavy building standing solidly on its thick whitewashed walls are reminders of the harsh life of the past. After having many other purposes, the house has finally become a refined hotel. It was renovated to skilfully highlight its history, while adding elegant and sober contemporary decor, blending old materials with designer furniture. You can come here to enjoy winter sports or the splendid summer months in the mountains, in the independence of private apartments and with a hotel service that is attentive to its guests’ wellbeing.
My great-grandfather bought the house in 1935 and since then it has been home to our family and our family's businesses and activities. I restored the entire building in 2020 and transformed it into a boutique hotel that I run with my wife.
The building dates back over 1000 years. The house features frescoes on the walls, original woodwork and original floors. The rooms are very spacious. Some have 3.5 m high ceilings and measure up to 75 m².
The building was first mentioned in 990. The name Maurn dates back to 1347 and is the oldest name we have found for this noble residence. We know that Castel Maurn was a court, a customs post, a hunting lodge, a tavern and a German sewing factory for ten years. For the last 50 years, Castel Maurn, known as Gaderthurn, was a youth hostel run by my mother. In 2020, I brought the charm of the past into the present by renovating the original building, all the while preserving its traditional character and style and turning it into an eight-suite hotel.
The charm of a place with a long history of over several hundred years, nestling in an unrivalled natural setting not far from the Dolomites. Castel Maurn is an energising place that delivers tranquillity and rejuvenation. We mix the extraordinary with the exceptional to make experiences here memorable. With the grandeur of a castle yet with a hushed, warm atmosphere, the hotel can accommodate a maximum of 20 people. It offers intimate relaxation in an almost private hideaway including hotel service. Guests can use the spa, a gym, a swimming pool and a bar. On request, we can call on the services of a masseur, a private chef, a ski guide or a hiking guide.
San Lorenzo is just five minutes from the Kronplatz ski area and 30 minutes from Alta Badia, at the beginning of the Gadertal Valley in the Dolomites. Castel Maurn is set in lush green meadows, just a three-minute walk from the forest. It is the ideal starting point for mountain excursions in both summer and winter. Here you will find the Trois Pics, Lac de Braies, the Fanes Sennes Braies nature reserve, among others. There are various restaurant options. In Brunico, the Michelin-starred l'Atelier Moessmer Norbert Niederkofler restaurant occupies a villa that was once part of the eponymous textile factory. Alpinn Food & Space Restaurant has a "Cook the Mountain" concept, using sustainability and regional flavours as their culinary guiding principles. In San Lorenzo di Sebato, the "Lerchners" restaurant, which is typical of the Alto Adige region and located right next to its own farm where the beef on its menu comes from, serves delicious regional cuisine prepared using the best local ingredients.
