La Teinturerie is a perfect symbol of the history of Roubaix, right through to its recent transformations. The town's textile past dates back to the 15th century, when it was legally authorised to produce "cloth from all types of wool” by Charles the Bold. In the 20th century, successive crises took their toll on the long flourishing industry, but the town managed to reinvent itself by turning to arts and culture. La Teinturerie followed the same path. Now dedicated to artists of our time, blending different arts, meetings and discussions, La Teinturerie has undergone a metamorphosis while retaining its soul. Its renovation has in no way ignored its industrial past. On the contrary, it is now enhanced with decorations that pay homage to its history and works of art that celebrate it. Whether you come here to reflect or relax, or to stay in an art showcase, the property will seduce you and endear you to it.
After having lived in Paris for many years, it felt natural for me to set up an art gallery in my home region of the North of France. The Lille–Kortrijk–Tournai Eurometropolis offers a wealth of cultural diversity on the border with Belgium. This former dye works appealed to me in the heart of Roubaix, a city of art and industry.
A loft-style house with a garden on a red-brick industrial site, this atypical venue offers visitors tranquillity and natural light - perfect for exhibitions and receptions.
Founded in 1897, the Roussel dye works processed uniquely wool, and at its peak processed up to 23 000 metres of fabric a day. Its emblematic 49-metre chimney dominates the site, which covered an area of one hectare. Now converted into a place to live and work, the dye works opens up to visitors on the French Heritage Days.
“La Teinturerie" art gallery offers a bed and breakfast as well as a reception area for corporate groups looking for an original, convivial venue. Immersion in the exhibitions offers a unique, singular experience throughout the year, with regular new exhibitions by artists from near and far. Experiencing art in this setting will help you relax and recharge your batteries.
Spend an evening sampling Portuguese tapas at the “Mercado Negro” set in a former factory and imagine yourself in Brooklyn! Or go to the Convent of the Visitation and sample the local beer! Take a break at "Les Trois Tricoteurs” and treat yourself to a made-to-measure pullover knitted on site. Wander around Roubaix cemetery, the local Père-Lachaise. Get lost in Lille's old town and sample the atmosphere of the North of France. Treat yourself to a coastal escapade and experience the endearing surrealism of this region's soul.
