Our opinion

At la Grande Maison, you can almost hear the sound of children playing around the pool or the pitter-patter of their feet on the steps. You almost find yourself straining to hear them, wanting to press your ear against the wooden doors as you listen for the squeaking of chalk against the chalk board in bedroom five. Every one of the bright guest rooms is tempting and inviting. They make you want to throw open the shutters and breathe in the fresh air of the garden, filling the room with the perfume of red roses whose striking colour serves as a common thread throughout the house. More than anything, you will dream of making this place your own, of filling it with your belongings and bursting with happiness. Such is the charm of large houses, and this one is certainly no exception.

Property owners’ take the floor

Why did you settle in this region, in this place and not elsewhere ?

Having spent 25 years in Grenoble, we wanted to move back to the Drôme region where we were born.

What specific architectural features does your building have ?

La Grande Maison dates back to the middle of the 19th century. It is in typical bourgeois style with large volumes, moulded ceilings, adjoining rooms and a beautiful staircase.

What is its history ?

The origin of the house is still unknown to us. It seems that a Valentinois dentist had it built as a family holiday home before the land, ponds and buildings were acquired by a family of horse dealers around 1910. We bought it from this same family and proceeded to spend 18 months on a full renovation of the property.

What can you offer people staying with you ?

Relaxation and calm are our key values at la Grande Maison. Of course, they would never be possible without the grounds with a twelve by four metre swimming pool and tall trees, or the living spaces inside the house. We welcome our guests as friends and ensure that they feel at home, but this goes without saying.

Places you would personally recommend

Our nearest restaurant is ‘La Pangée’ in Beaume-Cornillane. The staff are very friendly and the food is delicious. Just a little further away are several beautiful villages in the Drôme region, they offer some excellent restaurants such as ‘Les aubergistes’ in Marsanne, and ‘L'oiseau sur sa branche’ or ‘Cerise et vinaigrette’ in Saou. There are also plenty of walks and attractions in the area, not to mention some great spots to go for a dip in the Drôme or the Roanne rivers. A medieval dungeon and market can be found in Crest, whilst Saou offers a forest and the Richard oil mill.
