Between the seafront and the shopping district, the villa's Art Deco facade has retained its earthenware decor set with red bricks and woodwork painted in blue. The old inscriptions of the bathhouse that the property once was add to its immediately discernible charm. Inside, the high central patio and passageway also immerse visitors in a time when refinement and well-being went hand in hand. Such is the case today with the renovation and decoration of the premises transporting us to another world, far from everyday life. Between Cabourg and Deauville, guests will soon find themselves dreaming of the first resorts that were once reached by steam train from Paris.
I was looking for a zen place for the body and the mind. It was my local banker who introduced me to this magical and unusual place! So it was something of a discovery of the region and the seaside resort for me.
The building is in Art Deco style. The brick and mosaic ceramic facade is listed. It is punctuated by five bays which rise over two floors and the attic floor beneath the slate roof. The basement, lintels and cornices are in dressed stone. Between the floors, stone cartouches frame enamelled tiles bearing the inscription “Municipal establishment, hot baths, hydrotherapy”. At each end of the facade, the high cartouches are decorated with garlands of flowers with knots and diamonds. The windows on the first floor are protected by wooden railings and the three central windows are surmounted by a wooden awning with window pains. The roof is pierced by three dormer windows with semi-circular arches. The wooden frames are painted blue in accordance with the architectural codes of this protected area. Inside, two of the sixteen historic cabins have been preserved through the restoration, along with four frescoes in the vestibule, and ceramics by Charles Catteau. The interior patio is overlooked by a six-metre-high glass roof and was originally surrounded by bath and shower cabins.
Built between 1903 and 1913, the building originally housed the municipal bath and shower establishment. Until the 1960s, it welcomed members of the public wishing to wash themselves and benefit from seawater-based treatments in the sixteen cabins provided to accommodate them and a shared shower room at the end of the patio. Sold by the City to successive private owners in the 1950s, the property was transformed into a business and a garage before undergoing numerous transformations. In 2012, the house was bought by a patron who had a passion for heritage and was an architect of the Buildings of France. Under his leadership, major works were carried out over five years by the Compagnons du Tour de France. They preserved as much of the property's soul as possible along with some of the cabins and the historic patio.
A moment suspended in time. A unique experience in a singular, out-of-the-ordinary holiday resort just a few steps from the beach and the historic centre of this seaside resort. As soon as guests arrive, they swap their cars for bikes, televisions for books, noise for silence, and pollution for iodine and meditation! This is a unique and intimate universe where the interior decor features a balance of tones and antique furniture in total harmony with the place. A real invitation to "slow tourism" just two hours from Paris! The indoor activities include a jacuzzi, massages, a tea house, and reading, whilst the outdoor activities range from beaches and sailing to horse riding, cycling, and historical tours of the surroundings. A concierge service is available to guests.
L'Aigue Marine is a restaurant, wine bar and oyster seller just twenty metres from the Villa. It offers very high quality products and one of the best wine lists on the Côte Fleurie. Cyril Zangs' ciders: his sulphur-free cuvées are made from more than thirty varieties of apple picked directly from the tree. Le Calvados Huard, one of the Orne's most beautiful cellars of vintage Calvados in Caligny, has been in production for seven generations.
The whole villa can be privatised for filming and photo shoots. Accommodation is available in the seven rooms on site.
