Beaune, Pommard, Volnay, Meursault: with neighbours like these, the Clos des Ursulines boasts a choice position at the heart of one of the most famous regions in the world! No doubt that is why it has recently been decked out in its finest get up to welcome happy travellers in search of fine wines but who also wish to discover the Côte d'Or's rich history. Beneath its elegant old lady’s appearance, surrounded by high walls and behind an entrance gate supported by two elegant pilasters, lies a youthful beauty with a resolutely contemporary spirit. Her playful nature is sure to put a smile on guests' faces!
I chose to settle in this region, in this particular place, because this is where I grew up and where my roots are. Before I was born, my father, a dealer in ancient building materials, had bought this building, which was then in ruins, with the ambitious project of restoring it. We used to spend time here when I was a child, dreaming of its potential and imagining every nook and cranny in minute detail. The trials and tribulations of life and the scale of the project meant that my parents had to stop their work after renovating the roof and facades. The building lay derelict for almost 15 years. In the end, my father decided to give it to my sister and I. Today, we are carrying on this family project with passion, fulfilling our childhood dream.
The property comes in to view as you go through a wrought-iron gate framed by stone pillars. The former farm buildings are arranged in a U-shape around an inner courtyard. They include both a main residence and barn which were formerly used as wineries and agricultural and viticultural storage areas, and which have now been converted into gites. In the centre of the courtyard there is a stone trough that was probably originally a fountain or a drinking trough. The 16th-century buildings have gable roofs with flat Burgundy tiles and are built on one or two storeys. Inside, there are exposed stone walls, a French-style ceiling and a monumental period fireplace.
The history of our houses is linked to many women. Built in 1534 by the Lords of Bligny to compensate for the castle's inadequacies, it was initially owned by one of their daughters, Barbe Belerien. In 1684, the lords ceded the estate to the Ursuline nuns of Beaune; nuns who doubled as soldiers and who used it as a nursing home for over a century. The property later became a farm and a wine estate. The large wine press in one of the barns is a reminder of these times. Today, the house still bears the name "Clos des Ursulines” as a reminder of the nuns. We are also two sisters, thus carrying on the feminine tradition that runs through its history.
