The main facade, surmounted by a semicircular pediment, stands behind an ornate gate framed by high stone walls in the heart of the village. Lower wings extend from either side of the house as if to emphasise the perfect balance on display. By combinging the elegance of an 18th century residence (whose orginial features have largely been preserved) and the comfort of a warm family home, La Forge will easily lend itself to the creative eye of photographers and filmmakers as they find everything needed to unleash their imagination here.
We were looking to buy a property in the region. After viewing this one, we were head over heals - it was the house that chose and not the other way around. In addition, the location is ideal - it is just one hour from Paris by TGV and less than three hours by car.
It is a small chateau classed as a Historic monument. It dates back to 1735 and has a total surface area of approximately 600m2. It is perfectly designed with each room in a comfortable and livable size. The property features a beautiful facade in ashlar stone from the Meuse, an extremely rare suspended staircase, a vestibule which still bears the traces of its first owner's coaches, an orangery and beautiful outbuildings.
The old forges of Haironville, created in the middle of the 16th century, were sold in 1721 to Duke Léopold of Lorraine by Philippe d'Orléans. But by 1723, the forges, the furnace, the press and the mill were in such bad condition that Léopold, being unable to repair them, handed the fief of Haironville over to Jacques Louis Bourlon of Saint-Dizier, farmer general of the estates of the barony of Ancerville. The chateau was without a doubt built by him and is wife Agnès Bouland in 1735 (according to the date etched on the central fore-body). Sold as national property during the Revolution, the chateau changed owners several times during the 19th century, and was bought in 1907 by historian Pierre Arthur Lefebvre. By marriage, it was then passed down to organist Félix Raugel. After the death of the Raugel family, the chateau was abandoned and almost fell into disrepair. It was Mr. Georges Duménil, president of the Maison Paysannes de France association between 2011 and 2015, who bought and renovated the property in the 1980s before we bought it in 2015.
We open up the property to filming and photo shoots. The renovation, charm, organisation, outbuildings and garden with multiple corners provide endless atmospheres and settings. In addition, easy access by vehicle makes it easy for crews to set up.
In the heart of the Meuse, we are less than an hour from Verdun. For good food, we recommend "Le Bistro Saint-Jean" and "Côté Cépages" in Bar-le-Duc. "Le Petit Bouchon" in Bazincourt-sur-Saulx and "L’Archestrate" in Saint-Dizier. At the Navi farm, a five-hectare truffle plantation, it is hard to resist a taste of the mesenteric and ucinatum truffles and the Meuse truffle known as the "Burgundy truffle". For a gentle stroll, just follow the Saulx valley on the Chemin du Tacot in Haironville.
Crews have access to all of the buildings and the vaulted cellar for filming and photo shoots. Accommodation is available in the main building. Accommodation (hotels, guesthouses etc.) is also available in the surrounding area.
