Patiently and magnificently restored over several years by its owners, Bourron has once again become the perfect example of a late 17th century French château. The purity of its architecture, which perfectly outlines the virtues of symmetry, is wonderfully enhanced by the quality of its gardens and its park, which have been carefully designed. The particularly careful interior decoration creates an atmosphere of great refinement which meets the requirements of modern comfort. It nonetheless has the feel of a living family home. We can imagine that it is inhabited with passion and respect for the previous lineages, whose portraits and names accompany the guests in the reception rooms and bedrooms. An hour from Paris, you will have a total change of scenery here, going back centuries in just a short stay.
In 1999, my first job was to promote historical monuments. The Château de Bourron had just opened to the public and it was only natural that I came to offer my talents to the young woman who was in charge of it. Three months later we got married. My wife accepted responsibility for the property in 2001 at the age of 27, and it was then that our life turned to enhancing this enchanting place. All the rooms had to be renovated. There was no heating, electricity using threadbare wires, and bathrooms where we washed using a water jug. It took us 24 years to complete our restoration project without calling on the services of a decorator, because we wanted to go beyond modern trends - we wanted something out of time. We chose to stay faithful to the atmosphere of each room, to the famous people who influenced the family or the chateau. As custodians of this heritage in its green haven in the middle of the Fontainebleau forest, we have never ceased to want to make it known to others so that we can continue all of our projects to restore, enhance and safeguard this jewel.
The magic of this 17th century family property with its double horseshoe staircase, lies in the green setting that surrounds the château: a 42-hectare walled park, in the heart of the 22,000-hectare Fontainebleau forest. South of Paris and eight kilometres from Fontainebleau, Bourron chateau, built in "brick and stone" style, flanked by two small pavilions, was built at the end of the 16th and the very beginning of the 17th century on the site of an old 11th century feudal fortress. The chateau was listed and protected as a historic monument on 18 March 1926 and classified as a historic monument in 1971. This elegant clean construction is a fine example of the Henri IV-Louis XIII style. We invite guests to discover this property steeped in history.
The origin of the chateau’s name comes from Bovron, which means "gushing spring" in Celtic. If you look closely at the water, which seems calm, you will see the incessant bubbling of the innumerable springs that emerge from underground. One of Bourron's most famous events was the visit of Louis XV in October 1725. He met his father-in-law Stanislas Leszczynski during a hunt. The new Queen of France, Marie Leszczynska, came to visit her father in the day and stayed three nights at the Château de Bourron. The Queen even lost a diamond in the chateau canal. We are still looking for it! Various owners succeeded one another until 1878, when the chateau was bought by the Montesquiou-Fezensac, an old noble family from the Gers who still occupy it. Their ancestors include the famous d'Artagnan, Le Tellier de Louvois and Madame de Montesquiou (governess of the “little King of Rome”). They worked hard to restore the chateau and refurnish it. As the Countess de Montesquiou had no children, she passed on the property to her niece, the Countess de La Bédoyère, who in turn entrusted it in 2001 to one of her four daughters, Estrella, and her husband Guy de Cordon.
Complete serenity just outside Paris. We provide a warm, family-friendly welcome and share the French art of living and our passion for the place. Our residences have always been managed with great respect for the environment and in perfect harmony with nature. Nowadays called sustainable development, it once went without saying in all these big houses and we try to carry on this model while adapting it to today's requirements! Work is carried out in a family setting with a team of employees who work here and who have lived at the château for many years. It is this atmosphere and spirit that attracts our guests!
Our 42-hectare park using the bicycles we have available. A fitness room, for the more athletic is to be found in the chateau’s vaulted rooms, a testimony to the medieval period. There is a clay tennis court and outdoor Nordic baths. "Les Prémices", a gastronomic restaurant and renowned restaurant is housed in the former stables of the chateau. Located in the heart of the 22,000-hectare Fontainebleau forest, the Château de Bourron offers its unique heritage to guests founded on nature and authenticity. It is a breath of fresh air just waiting to be experienced and discovered! Close to the Chateau, the "Café de la Paix" restaurant is located in a beautiful building dating back to the end of the 19th century, which was a former artists' haunt. The "Bistrot du Broc", an old-fashioned bistro in an antique-shop setting.
There have been several film shoots on the 300-hectare estate: in the castle, the park, the white sand quarry and the forest. The castle, built at the end of the 16th century on the foundations of an old medieval fortress, is striking due to its noble sobriety, its regional "brick and stone" architecture, its pavilions and its horseshoe-shaped staircases. This elegant clean-cut building is a fine example of the Henri IV-Louis XIII style. The elegant residence, surrounded by a moat and a 42-hectare walled park, has unique interior decorations, period bathrooms, rooms with parquet floors, floor tiles and original fireplaces, and rooms with antique furniture. The chateau has been furnished with period family heirlooms, each one more precious than the last. We have chosen to remain faithful to the original décor. Thus, we have a Louis XV room (Marie Leszczynska room) or an Empire room (Récamier room). We did historical research when there were no souvenirs left in a room to find out what fabrics, colours and furniture style were used at that time. This is how we obtained the overall harmony which is so promising and so rare. It is a modernity which integrates long centuries of tradition. All of these elements make it a unique site for filming and shooting.
