Living on an island is undoubtedly one of those dreams – dreams of adventure, life on the open seas, isolation – that rarely come true. Yet this dream is exactly what the Island of Irus offers its guests. It is however far from the adventures described in the Odyssey, one of whose characters gives it its name. Rather it is a unique, peaceful holiday destination, sheltered in the heart of the Gulf of Morbihan between the Ile aux Moines and the Arradon coastline. Surrounded by many different tree species, strewn with impeccably mown lawns and bordered by private beaches, the island is a world of its own, both opening up to the gulf, yet protective of its privacy. The two carefully renovated houses, each with its own distinct character, can easily accommodate large gatherings of family or friends in a refined environment that leaves plenty of room for water sports, moments of relaxation and long, happy evenings.
I’ve spent holidays in Brittany, mainly in the Gulf of Morbihan since I was very young. I have a special connection with this place and memories of being a child when I discovered the joys of fishing and sailing. I already knew this island and this house, and as an adult I was intensely attracted to this location. A few years ago, we were lucky enough to be able to buy the wonderful island of Irus. We were won over by the beauty of the grounds, the huge diversity of trees and the spectacular views over the gulf that can be admired from the house and from the path that winds around the island.
The house is located on a 12-hectare private island, it is part of the commune of Arradon and just three minutes by boat from the coast. The property combines the beauty of the sea with the charm of the countryside, with its private beaches, landscaped garden, woods and meadows. The main building, covering an area of approx. 600 m², is a two-floor stone farmhouse, one of which is in the attic. The gable roofs feature Jacobean-style dormers with wooden eaves. The former stable has been converted into a 150 m² guest house.
The island belonged to Louis Suquet and his wife Louise Mangin, General Mangin’s sister since 1921. At the end of the Second World War, Jacqueline Brosset, Louise Mangin’s niece, inherited it from her aunt. Jacqueline Brosset sold it to Antoinette Fouquet. Many famous people have stayed here, including Vercors, Pierre Messmer and René Pléven. René Pléven said, "A few clouds may have been rising on Europe's horizon in 1932, but we still had plenty of chances to escape the storm, and we didn't think much about it. On the island, we led a life of paradise on earth. I've never known such freedom.” In 1979, the island was the setting for Marcel Cravenne's TV series "L'Île aux trente cercueils". We bought it in 2018.
Staying on Irus is an exclusive island experience. You will be far from the hustle and bustle, yet just a short boat ride from the mainland. Whether they be in winter or summer, holidays here are like no other. Live by the rhythm of the tides, stroll through the landscaped grounds, savour the island's fruits and vegetables, honey and shellfish. It's also all about having the sea, which is just a few steps away, all to yourself, sharing the joys and pleasures shared by young and old alike with family or friends, whether it’s on holiday or simply to celebrate life. The farmhouse has been renovated with families in mind, offering guests refinement, comfort and conviviality. There are big tables, a games room and a children's dormitory, a spacious living room, numerous bedrooms, a fireplace in the living room and the kitchen. Paddles, windsurfing boards, children's bikes, a boat, a hammam, a table tennis table and table football are all available.
This is an island of happiness, where our guests can fish for their supper, eat vegetables from the vegetable garden and pick the best bounty from the fruit trees. They can also sample the oysters grown on the island by our oyster-farming friends, go kayaking off the island's pontoon, fish for sea bass and cuttlefish with a fisherman who will teach them or help them improve their skills, set their nets to catch sole and skate, or go for a bike ride on the nearby Ile aux Moines. It's all about the simple pleasures of life!
The entire 13-hectare island and its property are available for filming and photo shoots. In addition to the main house and guest house, there are private beaches, a landscaped garden, woodland and meadows. Accommodation comprises eight bedrooms, divided between the main house and the guest house.
