Between the wooded hills that push the roads into innumerable bends and the high silhouette of the Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges cathedral, this hamlet is certainly discreet. It was no doubt seeking to better protect itself from the mountain climate. The house, surrounded by a garden, features a pediment on the roof that adds a touch of notability. The interior, completely renovated, has a contemporary feel that nonetheless enhances the property's oldest elements. The resulting atmosphere is peaceful and airy, it welcomes families or friends who will enjoy a well-deserved rest here after long wanders through the Comminges.
With a passion for the mountains and all the pleasures they bring (hiking, skiing, cycling) we were looking for a holiday/weekend home one hour from our main residence, at the foot of the Pyrenees, which all of the family could enjoy. We fell in love with this house, its location and Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges which is ranked among the most beautiful villages in France. The natural and peaceful environment, not far from our lives in the city, allows us to recharge our batteries and get away from it all whenever we need to.
The house was built in the 19th century. Surrounded by vast nature, it is the oldest in the hamlet. The property has two floors and an attic, with a total surface area of 300m². The masonry walls of the facades are coated and lined with numerous windows adorned with solid shutters. Some of the windows and doors open onto the terrace at the front of the house. The four-sided roof is covered with Roman tiles. There is also a 600m² garden with a breathtaking view of the Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges cathedral.
We do not know all the house's secrets, but we do know that it was home to several generations of a family of farmers. It was also a place of passage for hikers and pilgrims before it was bought and renovated by a couple of architects. We have fitted the property out, imbued it with our vision of life, our history and our desires in order to share it with all those who wish to stay there.
In the heart of the hamlet of Mont, surrounded by a vast garden with a view of the cathedral, our house is a place dedicated to families. The large living rooms and sleeping capacity allow everyone to move around and have a private space to themselves. Located at the foot of the Pyrenees, the Commingeoise countryside is particularly rejuvenating and offers family leisure activities (for both beginners and the more experienced) and indoor or outdoor sports along the one thousand kilometres of marked trails. These include long-distance hiking, family discovery walks, mountain biking, cycling, trail running, and horse riding.
A large part of Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges' religious heritage is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the Way of Santiago de Compostela. It passes right in front of the house, so all that is left to do is put on your shoes and explore the various hiking trails! Le Fournil de Saint-Bertrand, a back-to-work bakery for local women, sells natural sourdough bread made from old, local wheat flour, baked in a superb wood-fired oven. It is, of course, organic and "Nature and Progress" certified. It is best to reserve your loaf and it will be hard to go back to anything else once you have tried it. The Cours Saint-Benoît serves charcuterie and cheese platters (made with local products) to go with an evening drink in a pretty interior courtyard and a wooded garden. Local farmers' markets take place in Montrejeau and Aspet. Visit the Comminges ponds for organically farmed trout. The Comminges International Festival of Sacred Music takes place in August. The ski resorts of Baqueira Beret in Spain and Peyragudes are only 40 minutes away.
