"What can we say about Lake Como, except to pity people who do not go mad over it" wrote Stendhal. From its high vantage point, the villa contemplates the expanse of water beneath its feet, which has nothing to separate it except a terrace and a swimming pool that extends into a sloping garden where lawns, outcrops of rocks, palm trees and olive trees mingle. Located at the edge of the village and in the shadow of the crenellated castle, the view will not fail to make guests who have the privilege of staying there lose all reason. The house, renovated in a warm, contemporary spirit, will inspire gentle reveries, in between long walks and long, lazy dinners.
We are a German family who, after having spent a memorable holiday on Lake Como and the surrounding region, literally fell in love with the area. Its magic worked so well that we decided to buy a house and settle down here.
The villa is on the western shore of Lake Como. It unfolds over three levels with a total surface area of 250 m2. A complete renovation which was finished in 2020 has enhanced the house’s historical feel. Most of the original tiled floors have been preserved as well as the traditional Italian house layout. The attic, now converted into a bedroom and children's play area, has retained its original wooden floor and beams. The villa has a large terrace with unobstructed views of the lake, which is accessible from the living room, dining room and kitchen.
The Villa al Castello was built in the early 1900s in Rezzonico, a picturesque village with roots that go back to the Roman times. The adjacent Castello Rezzonico - which gave the house its name - was built by the influential De la Torre family in the 14th century. The wealthy and powerful Milanese have always deserted the Lombard capital in the summer to breathe in the fresh air of Lake Como. Even though set in the foothills of the Alps, the lake has a mild climate all year round, which means gardens can be created on the steep slopes where it never freezes. Our house, simple and family-oriented, has kept a holiday house feel, like many other locations on the shores of the lake today.
The Italian lakes are the Mediterranean of the Alps, with their mild climate and gentle way of life mixing the nobility of the mountains with the tender air and lake waters. Stendhal said, "Everything speaks of love". Lake Como, shaped like the Greek letter delta and probably the most famous lake in the Alps, embodies romanticism and la dolce vita. Villa al Castello is an ideal refuge for families and groups of friends who wish to connect with the joy of simple living. Here we have designed everything with a mind to welcoming children as well, as we have five ourselves. You can enjoy a breathtaking view of the lake from every room. For more meditative souls in search of simple pleasures, why not sit on the first floor balcony and watch the boats go by and admire the beautifully manicured grounds and gardens of the nearby Castello Rezzonico.
46 kilometre-long Lake Como is ideal for swimming and water sports around Lario and Colico. The mountains beckon hikers and cyclists alike. Beginners can enjoy the flat Lago Greenway in the Bergamo Alps, while experienced hikers can climb the highest mountain, Monte Legnone (2610 m) or Monte Croce di Muggio (1797 m). Cappella San Domenico is a 3.5 km circular family hike on the western shore. Thanks to the ingenious ferry system on the Lario, it’s easy to discover Lake Como’s beautiful coastal towns - Menaggio, Tremezzo, Bellagio, as well as Villa Balbianello, featured in legendary films such as the James Bond film Casino Royale or Star Wars. Villa Carlotta, a magnificent neoclassical building, is a must-see.
The entire villa and its garden can be rented for filming and photography. It has one of the most spectacular views around of the surrounding landscape. There are five bedrooms available to rent on site.
