We were looking for a place where nature and culture had been well-preserved. Just a few minutes from the edge of the Dordogne and Martel, this property immediately enchanted us. Local products, an abundance of flora and fauna, and friendly locals confirmed made our decision even easier. We were also looking for space to create a permaculture vegetable garden and orchard as well as a small chicken farm.
The origins of the property date back to the 13th century. Enlarged over time, the current dwelling is an amalgamation of several buildings which have been placed at right angles one after the other. To the west is the gîte which adjoins the main building and forms one side of the interior courtyard. Raised on two levels and with beautiful proportions, it was built in exposed regional limestone and topped with a roof made of small, flat terracotta tiles. The interior was probably once used as a barn for cattle. We have preserved the original materials and interior structure as much as possible. The cattle boxes are still clearly visible and some now house the kitchen, the new stairwell and a spa. The living room is located in part of the barn with a two-floor high ceiling.
This former agricultural building, which served as an outbuilding of the main house, has undergone transformations over time just like the manor. One part is from the 18th century and another is from the early 19th. After farming ceased here, part of the building served as accommodation for the caretaker, which is still the case today. Another part was transformed into a loft and was inhabited by a painter. After purchasing the property in 2017, I completely restored the outbuildings to transform them into a gîte by creating generous and comfortable spaces than can accommodate up to eight people.
We offer a personalised welcome because we are almost always on site and live right next door. The surrounding nature is incredible soothing and the seclusion prevents any disturbance. Perched at the top of a hill that ends with a steep limestone cliff overlooking the Dordogne valley, the property enjoys an impressive panoramic view. In the heart of a preserved and largely wooded environment, the estate extends across a single piece of land that covers just over eighteen hectares. When they are in season, we also share products from our vegetable garden/orchard as well as fresh eggs.
Martel, a small medieval town nicknamed "the city of seven towers", and its excellent restaurants are just a few minutes away. Our favourites are Saveurs des Halles, Le petit Moulin, Maison Sophie and Le plein Sud. Also a few minutes away are Gluges beach, the Guinguette de la Copeyre and the Guinguette du Vieux Chêne. We love canoeing or kayaking on the Dordogne, which is of course recommended in all the guide books. The spectacle of the landscape and the beautifully calm river, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a magical moment that we never tire of with our friends.
The view of the Dordogne valley from our esplanade is magnificent and the manor itself offers many locations for filming or photo shoots. The outbuilding can be used as accommodation and we can provide a double bedroom with a bathroom in the manor. Martel also has a number of possibilities for accommodation.
