For almost forty years, we felt Parisian at heart, despite having both grown up in the countryside. During lockdown, the idea of ??returning to the calm and to nature became enticing. I've always had family in Provence and have always been drawn to the unique light here. It was only natural that I took my husband here to set up our family home. The house is located in a village at the crossroads of Alpes-de-Haute-Provence and Vaucluse in the magnificent Luberon massif. With its proximity to the mountains, the sea (Marseille and the calanques are only an hour away) and a major cultural city like Aix-en-Provence, we felt that this region had a lot to offer. Our love for this house and its garden then truly convinced us to settle in this small, snail-shaped village surmounted by a beautiful, fortified citadel.
It is a bastide built in 1836 on a rectangular base, covered with a double slope and triple Genoise canal tiled roof. With simple and balanced architecture, it is two storeys-high and looks out to the south through six large symmetrical windows with shutters. A French window above the front door on the first floor opens onto a balcony with an ornate wrought iron railing. Built entirely with noble materials, the house has been enhanced by careful restoration works and by the décor whose soul matches our own.
This building has always belonged to the same family. The last occupants, who were great lovers of art, carried out many renovations and expansions in the 1980s. They also created a lovely landscaped garden which we were utterly enchanted by when stepping through the main door. Shortly after, we discovered the elegant building a few steps below in the shade of a one-hundred-year-old lime tree. After a few months of work to bring a touch of modernity and more comfort, we have added to the house's story by installing furniture and works by contemporary artists that we are particularly fond of.
Located in the heart of a small village nominated a "village of character", the house has all the amenities needed for a most pleasant stay: beautiful rooms for meeting with family or friends around a large table, and a very large kitchen/dining room allowing guests to cook in good company. In the enclosed garden surrounded by local stone walls, a large swimming pool and several terraces (including a shaded one under the wisteria) allow guests to choose their spot for the day according to their desires, the time, the sunshine, the weather and the season as they regain some time for themselves.
Cathy, Lucie and Christophe's grocery store is just a few steps from the house and offers a multitude of quality products from local producers as well as a catering service. La Manne Céleste is worth a visit for its delicious cuisine bursting with Asian flavours and its excellent pizzas! If (like us) you enjoy hunting for antiques, visit Giovanna and Jean-Philippe, who, if they are not on the road, will welcome you into their charming shop. Visit the Prieuré de Salagon to discover the garden with plant varieties from all over the world. For lovers of Provençal markets, the Forcalquier market is the largest in the region. Down the alleyways of the old town, you can discover the beautiful work of Marie Ayala (a visual artist) or the pretty ceramics created by Myriam Ait Amar who has just joined the Homo Faber Guide, a platform developed by the Michelangelo Foundation and dedicated to craftsmanship.
The entire property is available for filming and photo shoots. Accommodation is available on site. There are several hotels within a four kilometre radius.
