Location and history make the beauty of a place, but in some cases, an element of mystery remains, something that escapes and draws you in. Lourmarin, with its "overwhelming beauty" (in the words of Camus) shines like a jewel in the Luberon sun, in the midst of an almost austere landscape. Great figures have certainly imbued the walls and paths with their talent, but it was the village that bewitched them first. Set back a little, the Establerie has a front row seat. Large and robust on its stones, this old building now features open spaces, separated by floors, where light floods in to make the colours sing. In a region where a sense of hospitality and a taste for finer things are cardinal virtues, this house has everything you would expect from a real Lourmarinoise.
When we had the opportunity to buy this old building, somewhat by chance, we were utterly amazed by the view and immediate environment. We are close to the amenities of the village but set slightly apart which ensures real tranquillity. The Luberon regional park preserves the beauty of the site. The skies here are immense and the light is a never-ending spectacle. The mild climate allows you to enjoy the outdoors all year round. We are particularly fond of the southern scents, the access to quality products, the vitality of the village and the cheerfulness of the locals.
The Establerie was built in stone with 80cm-thick walls. The interior space has been completely fitted out. We renovated the property with a focus on natural light, traditional materials (terracotta tiling, ironwork, plaster) and the volumes of the cathedral lounge which still features three majestic rafters. The house faces west and south. The outer wall of the exposed stone façade, grouted in lime and sand, has remained unchanged. The swimming pool was built in the shape of a pond in order for it to blend in as discreetly as possible with the surroundings of the château.
According to the 1637 plan, the building housed, among other things, the stables of the Château de Lourmarin which is located two hundred metres away. The oldest part of the chateau was built in the 15th century on the ruins of a 12th century fortress. The construction of a Renaissance wing with a remarkably unified style began in 1526. In 1920, the chateau was acquired by Robert Laurent-Vibert. He was an industrialist from Lyon and the owner of Pétroles Hahn, but was also a great scholar, a student of the École Normale Supérieure, a history agrégation holder and a member of the French School in Rome. By a testamentary vow declared in 1923, he bequeathed the chateau to the Aix Academy of Sciences, Agriculture, Arts and Belles-Lettres on the condition that it created a foundation in his name. We restored the Establerie in 2011 with respect for history, the property's past, and traditional, local know-how.
The perfect refuge for relaxing with family or friends and experiencing the sweetness of Provence near Lourmarin which is just a five-minute walk away. A magnetic village endowed with history and spirit: Protestants sought asylum here during the Wars of Religion, and the region is a fertile literary ground with the likes of Camus and Bosco having lived here. It is also a permanent source of inspiration for walkers who can admire the Luberon mountains on the horizon, enjoy the tranquillity of the early mornings, but also the permanent vitality, the liveliness of the Friday markets, and the quality of the seasonal products. The garden of the Establerie is filled with olive trees, almond trees, strawberry trees, and oleanders. The trees and shrubs create a green setting conducive to rest, a sense of escape, and elevation. The view of the chateau, the village, the temple and hills of the Luberon, and the slightly set back location of the house make it a very unique place.
Lourmarin is one of the most beautiful villages in Provence. Other spots nearby add a little variety, allow visitors to blend into local life or escape to nature.
